Ive noticed recently that when i use the wipers that the windscreen is a bit smeary which when raining is annoying as i cant see in front of me, is it just a case of using kitchen roll to wipe the blades or do i get them replaced, did i read on here you can use vinegar on the blades

Firstly...............Check you have cleaner in your washer fluid, check the rubber aren't warn, then clean them and thoroughly clean your windscreen it could be greasy from road dirt.

If this doesn't solve the problem then I would look to changing the wiper blades.

  • I find that using a liberal amount of vinegar on a couple of pieces of kitchen roll and wiping the blades a couple of times works wonders.

Yes, vinegar works well. Basically, if your windscreen is greasy the the wipers will smear, even brand new. Various methods I've used include vinegar, neat washing up liquid ( rinse off well, as it contains salt which is not good for the bodywork ), meths, white spirit, and neat screen wash. With all of these you need to be careful about what gets splashed onto your paintwork, but they do clean the windscreen very effectively. I've also used Halfords ( though I'm sure others are available ) "Intensive Glass Cleaner", this was brilliant. And remember to clean the wiper blades as well as the screen itself. But you do need to make sure the wiper blades are in good condition - they're not expensive to replace, and possibly rank as one of the most safety-critical items on a car, especially on dark rainy nights :-)

This problem is usually caused by a build up of traffic film. The trouble with this stuff is that it moves very easily across the glass so you need to clean the whole windscreen in small sections using either vinegar, as suggested earlier, or dishwasher powder dissolved in a little water (take care to keep this off the paintwork). Use lots of new kitchen paper to clean each section and then throw it away. This prevents the contaminants from being moved around the glass.

Wipers will need a really good clean too, with more kitchen paper and vinegar etc

Another vote for the vinegar cleaning option, worked wonders on the crabmobile.

If you need new blades, wiperblades.co.uk are selling 'aero retrofit' wipers, I bought some (cheapest anyway) and they're just brilliant.
