  • We have just submitted a booking for a Ford Transit van for one day - I'm slightly wary as the price is very good and includes delivery and collection which most other companies have stopped doing. Did you end up making the booking?

Ours is for April 4th so I can update you after then if you are still thinking of using them.
  • I'd advise you to avoid. I have just had a terrible experience.

They sub the work out and take a £40 management fee and you get a seperate charge from the 'Actual' hirer.

In my case I hired a lorry for 1 day and it was rehired to Midas Hire then rehired to Meridan Hire. They charged me for three days and Nationwidehire4u told me to contact the end hirer direct and refused to help with the refund which I still have not got!

Nationwidehire4u side stepped the whole overcharge issue as they have their £40. The guy (John Frost) was extremely rude and fobbed me off.
  • DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY - i wanted to cancelw ith them and was advised over the phone and by email that no money would be taken from my account - they proceeded to take money from my account and then ignore my requests for the money to be given back

I would never have cancelled had i known that they would be charging me money

I just used this company and its been a horrible experience.

first the car is late because the cant find a 7 seater and try and fob us off with a 5 seater. Then its a manual and we booked an automatic, so we have to change the driver details. then the guy who dropped it off had inaccurate damage papers. I get him to amend them but the copy he gives me is still missing loads of stuff. so i get one of his copies (unsigned). on the plus side the car did actually go and got us to and from our location. It was ment to be picked up from my house at 6 but they refused to come till the morning. By this point I'm furious. I then find out by my own investigation that they are charging me £500 for damage we never caused. By this point i feel very ill. Fortunately i took photos of the car , showing the damage before we left. We are no in very protracted discussions with them to sort it out. THESE GUYS ARE DODGY!
  • ...why did I not find this information BEFORE I booked a moving van from them????

DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY - THEY ARE THIEVES AND CROOKS!!

Booked a moving van and when we got it, it was as old as they come, totally battered, but never mind, it drove like it was supposed to. Problems started the day we finished the hire:

    1. We had booked the van to be picked up by Nationwide at the end of the hire at 6pm in the evening. They showed up at 11am the day after so we weren't there (had to go to work) when it was picked up.
    2. Then they charged us £500 excess because they claimed it had damage on the lift. This was news to us but we couldn't protest because we hadn't been there when it was picked up. The person we spoke to on the phone said it was an easy, simple little job involving no parts, just unbending this lift. It would take one man 1-2 hours we were told and we would get back whatever wasn't used of our deposit.
    3. We had paid £60 to have our excess reduced to £250. When the £500 was charged to our card, it took a long time for them to finally accept that they had to repay us the £250. They did, eventually.
    4. Then we heard nothing for several weeks, contacted them and were told that we were not getting any of the money refunded because the repair cost £299 plus VAT. I then asked to see a copy of the repair bill and then the emailing back and forth started, they lied about the amount and refused to repay anything but we are yet to see a copy of the repair bill!!

In the end I wrote that if I did not either get my money back or see proof that the repair had cost that much, I would contact Watchdog and report them. This email they did not respond to so I have reported... I will also write this on any forum I can find to warn others!!

DON'T USE NATIONWIDE HIRE 4U LTD - YOU'LL REGRET IT!!!!
  • I belatedly found this forum having booked a hire vehicle with this company. As the above posters highlighted, the company is merely an agent. You will see charges coming through from two different companies on your bank statement.

The person I spoke to on the phone was extremely rude when I enquired about the breakdown of hire charges. He even hung up the phone on me. At no point during the conversation was I rude to anyone.

Since the hire was over the xmas hols period, it was too late for me to find an alternative which I would have done in an instant!
  • Can't believe we didn't check credentials before booking. Had to cancel our mini-bus back in May 2009, when 50% of my partners stag do mates dropped out. Cancelled the hire no problem. Informed by email that we would be refunded by Nationwide Hire minus £49 admin fee (which we accepted as it was in T&Cs). Then John Frost (rudest man on planet) confirmed by email that partner companies would refund their portions: A1 Hire and Europcar. Sadly, it appears that Nationwide Hire didn't cancel the hire with their partners so a mini-bus appeared (early) on our driveway while we were at work. So we phoned, but they had gone home. The next day I called Nationwide Hire to be told that they would get the van taken away - however it stayed till the following Tuesday when it was collected. I then saw that Europcar had debited the full fee from our credit card, plus an invoice arrived to state that they had charged for us not refilling a the mini-bus and for the fuel that they used dropping it over to us!!!!!! All this for a van that we had cancelled. I've emailed and called Nationwide Hire on and off since May. I've also spoken to A1 and europcar. No one will help. The latter two say its Nationwide's probem, but won't send me any correspondence to help the cause. I think I can kiss my £360 goodbye but I am contacting trading standards in the area. Also A1 did tell me that "loads of people have been through the same with Nationwide Hire"; and that they no longer do business with them. Some comort (not). Whatever you do, don't use this company.

I am having a dispute with them at the moment, I booked vehicle online to be delivered. They then said they could not deliver, my partner provisionally agreed we would collect the vehicle but we then changed our mind (within half an hour and for a valid reason - we had no way of dropping the vehicle back off for the agreed time) and Nationwide Hire 4 u have now turned round and said they will charge us a cancelation fee of £35 - what a cheek, when trying to ring their office you get to speak to the most unhelpful person you could imagine (his name is John Frost) and there are also no contact details anywhere to be found on the website so they are basically sending customers on a wild goose chase. The thing is if you just put in nationwide hire uk in the search engine it does not come up with a great deal so there is no way to do any sort of proper reasearch unless you know they use the '4U' bit. I would stay well clear, I will keep posting of the outcome.....:mad::mad:
  • I had an extremly unpleasant experience with nationswide hire, uk. I would strongly suggest that consumers be aware of their marketing tactics, and also not be conned by the cheap rates that they are marketing on their website.

I had originally booked for the vehicle in question for 2 days and when I tried to change this to one day, they wouldn't allow me to do so. Now their term and conditions does not stipulate that there will be any charge for alterations, just cancellation, and given they were given sufficient time to alter this request, they vehemently denied the request for the change.

I found both John and Jeff offhand and also extremely rude, and after exchanging a number of emails, they refused to communicated further via this means which meant it was difficult to get any correspondence from them as their terms stipulates all communication regarding the rental hire should be through emails.

I will have to agree with the post that they are cowboys out to make a fast buck from consumers like myself and other, and again strongly advise others not to use their services.

With all the hassles and stress of communicating with them, time spent on emails, it would be more advisable to use reliable services like AVIS or Hertz so that the hassles can be minimized
