I got a 200GB external HD and external DVD burner to pull files off my PVR (Humax 9200) edit them on a laptop and then burn them to DVD.

Externals are also useful for backups etc.. The Dyes on CD / DVD are only stable a few years, except for DVD-RAM good for 30ish years. So external HDD have there place in the storage mix.

I also use one for backing up my photos about 20G. This is on DVD as well and kept off site, but I also keep a copy on an external HD.

Sounds like a good price, but I still haven't managed to work out what the fuss is all about with external hard disks. Aside from the fact that they are obviously more portable. Why would I want a portable one. I commute to work so I could take everything back and for but it seems easier to move only the files I want which easily fit on a pen drive. Can anyone convince me of why I might want one. I'm probably being stupid, but aren't they slower, more likely to be stollen and not particularly practical?

I'm at uni. Pc at uni, pc at home (3 hours away). when I go home, I don't want to bring a massive great big pc with me every time. An external hard drive allows for the following:

External backup of pc (data/files etc...)
    Easy transfer of files

If I want to access my music at home easily... then a usb drive with 300gb's of storage space cna easily allow me to transfer them. It can also be used at both computers easily so permanent storage/backup possible!

Its a fnatastic idea. And i'm seriously considering using another £100 of my student loan on this device!!!!

This isn't quite a Quick grab it as its been around on Amazon for a month or so now.

I've mentioned it on a few posts in the past.

Sorry it's a bit of a technical question, but how easy it is to copy the whole of one drive onto another one?

I could do with a bigger hard drive but I'm worried about losing everything!!

    Hi,

Use norton ghost to copy the whole disk.

I bought an 80gig Samsung HD from PCWorld for this sort of money in January of last year.
It died within a month and i could never be bothered to take it back!

Now i stick to Western Digital HD's - but i'm sure others have just as equal horror stories about WD, a very good price though, if i had space for any more i'd prolly get it regardless of previous experiances.

You get a 3 year warranty on a Samsung drive, so you could send it back to Samsung and get a replacement. You do need to contact Samsung to get an RMA number and send the drive back in its original packaging.

EDIT: Sorry, I have just realised that this has already been mentioned.
