Small Claims against car thief?

Hey, Happychappy
Don't be so prickly. The plain fact of the matter is that the police are ineffective at street level. Its not the bobby on the ground's fault and in my pretty extensive experience most of them are dedicated and want to do a good job. Its just they are prevented from doing so and after a relatively short period they become jaded and disllusioned. Whether its the bobby's fault or not the fact remains that they are still ineffective.
The fault lies with government (and that includes the previous lot) and an "officer corps" (heavily promoted and encouraged by the liberal elite) that sees itself as some sort of emerging social arbiter destined to bring comfort and reassurance to the community. This coupled with the scooping up of every shiny and apparently new idea means that there are specialist units for just about everything (all busying themselves with ensuring their continued existance) and very few generalists. That, as a consequence, the streets have essentially been abandonned to the marauding hordes of chav and chavette is really no surprise.
Btw - I didn't get this off "a mate down the pub", nor off the wall in the bog at the bus station. A clue may lie in the choice of avatar. My very sincere apologies for those hoping to request off-board assistance but I am now so inundated with requests that in order to do justice to those "already in the system" I am no longer accepting PM's and am unlikely to do so for the foreseeable future (August 2016).
For those seeking more detailed advice and guidance regarding small claims cases arising from private parking issues I recommend that you visit the Private Parking forum on PePiPoo.com0 -

I totally agree with everything your saying, it's just idiots like the one above want it both ways, they are the first to rant when they get done for speeding, claiming you should be out catching criminals, and then when criminals get caught and let off or ridiculous sentences, the same character blames the police and comes up with the same old I pay your wages.
There are by far too many "Gucci squads" in the job, and not enough front line 24/7, and likwise yes it is a case of lions led by lambs, more now unfortunately the lambs are getting fluffier with more imported?0 -

"Idiots like the above" which probably make up 90% of the population that only encounter the Police through either being a victim of crime, or, being a driver. Never enough time/resources to investigate "petty crime" such as car crime, vandalism or burglary, I put petty in inverted commas because to the victim this is far from petty. Always enough to man a speed trap or ANPR situation. Surely the top knobs in the force can see they are alienating themselves from "normal" law abiding members of the public.0 -

Why get your hands dirty catching proper criminals when you could sit in an ANPR/"Safety" Camera van on a bypass somewhere?
The police in this country are far too lazy."Love you Dave Brooker! x"

From reading the OP it seems that the Police got him in end for this 'petty' crime so good on em. What the court choose to do with them is down to them and no reflection on the Police, did you get any compo from the court OP? I understood that anyone convicted now over and above specific comp has to pay a victim surcharge for victims in general ie..you?
No doubt if any was awarded it would effect the any civil claim, which would appear to be unlikely from the above.
Although some appear to see threads that have the slightest thing to do with a Police an opportunity to knock them, I personally give them the thumbs up having had good experiences as a victim of crime. Sure they could do better but couldn;t we all!0 -
I was burgled in January. Larder window smashed, jewellery, lap-top and Omega Seamaster watch taken, place left like a tip. The police were bloody marvellous; they spent a lot of time with us, offered support and found the scumbag who did it. The fact that he only got 26 months (with 11 other offences to take into consideration!) was not their fault. I can't speak highly enough of them.I used to think that good grammar is important, but now I know that good wine is importanter.0

My brother in law had his car pinched and written off a while. Similar scenario to OP as in thief was caught for another crime.
As he was a scumbag with no insurance he was paid out by the missing insurance bureau (MIB).
Would this be possible in your case. I think his insurance company sorted this for him.
I think MIB pay out then they get money back from thief at whatever rate they pay.0
