Can I get my late payment and interest charge back?

Options
Hi all,
I always pay my credit card in full by direct debit and never had to think about it.
However, I got my card stolen and replaced it with a new card. I got the new card about 3 days before the payment was due.

However, I just checked my online statements and I've been charged £20 for late payment as well as 1.5% interest on my purchases

As the balance was transferred and I was told I could use the same PIN for the new card, would it be possible for me to get the charges refunded or bite the bullet for my ignorance and naivety?

As far as I know, you can still pay into an account when a card is lost, so their response will just be that you could still have paid it online, in a bank or by post.

I would certainly ring them in the first instance and ask them to consider the circumstances, if it is the first time this has happened they may be prepared to waive the charge. However if they don't I would complain as the charges seem overly punitive.

Unfortunately you've learned the hard way that not sticking to your terms & conditions hits you in the pocket.

This is a fairly standard arrangement on a credit card - if you don't pay before the due date then not only will you be charged a late payment fee but you'll generally forfeit any introductory offers on the card as well.

If you've never missed a payment before then call up your credit card provider and grovel a bit. You'll find that most of them will refund the charge, and very probably reinstate your introductory rate.

But if they say no then there is not much you can do except put it down to experience.

At the end of the day you can always get a new card and shift the balance over to that.

I thought a Direct Debit would have prevented this happening, since the card issuer takes the full amount due from the customers bank account (by DD) and applies it to pay off the balance on the credit card. Lost or not its up to THEM to take the amount due and apply it to the credit card account.
I would def complain, even hint at closing the account and transferring balance to another card (mention egg or tsb etc).Don't take it lying down, at least give 'em some stick !!
  • If the payment via DD was applied to the other card for the due date (the stolen one) then the Card issuer should accept that as a full payment and refund the interest as well as charges incurred as payment was made to the account albeit the stolen one in time as per the account T&C's.

Call them and advise the situation
It's nice to be nutty but's more important to be nice
  • The only reason I can see for this is if the DD failed for some reason. If the DD was taken from the account they should refund the charges.
