Small and cheapest device to connect to the internet

Everyone has different needs, different preferences and different budgets. We shouldn't try to impose our own on other people.
I'm not widely renowned on here for my rampant hostility towards Apple but I wouldn't want an iPhone, myself. No battery swapability (and taking it to an Apple Store and paying £55 to get it replaced is not my own idea of an ideal option if it runs out of juice, late at night, somewhere where it's not possible to plug in a charger), no memory expandability, a pointless 2 MP camera without a flash and no ability to use it as a modem for my laptop are deal-breakers for me - even if I did want MMS messaging (which it can't do).
My own preferred solution when travelling is a laptop or netbook running Mac OS X plus a Nokia N82. The latter can get either of the former on to the Internet using Bluetooth where there's a cellphone signal but no wi-fi, it has an exceptionally good 5 MP camera with Xenon flash, mine has a 16 GB microSD card, it has a swappable battery, it does wi-fi itself, it has (free) GPS and - if I wanted it to - it can do MMS. And it synchs with my Macs very well.
It doesn't have a QWERTY keyboard, which to me is essential for email, but if I'm travelling really light I take my Nokia 9300i Communicator with me as well, instead of a laptop or netbook.
For me, this is a greatly more versatile and capable solution than an iPhone. But I wouldn't urge it on others if an iPhone would suit their own needs adequately and ageeably.
It works for me, though.
And, although the expense of it is not my primary consideration, it all costs me less than an iPhone would.
Don't laugh at banana republics. :rotfl:

you'd now be better off living in one.

How do you define "not too expensive"?
I would get an iPod Touch (starting at £150 on Amazon), as it has the best mobile browser bar none, and thousands of applications for it.
hi marty. I wonder if you know the answer to this question. I have started using my new Ipod touch and its taking some getting used to. I have created a google map and pinpointed everything I want to see. I've just tried to go into my maps on the Ipod but it doesnt seem to work?
I've purchased a fantastic application from apple which is a guide to attractions and etc and if Im connected, it will give me directions. Ideally though I'd like to be able to get into the map I have saved online. Am I missing something?

Hi there, it should save the last map/set of directions you were looking at (I presume you're talking about the Maps application). Obviously if you want to look at something else, you'll need a wifi connection.0

I didnt really explain very well in my last post. I went online using my PC and created a map of locations. I then tried to use Safari to access the map and it wouldnt let me. I'm presuming that google maps use flash or something similar which Ipod software cannot cope with.
Ideally I would like to save several maps on my Ipod touch so that I can refer to them when not online?Matched betting proceeds so far: £505.000 -
Why don't you use the Google Maps application on your iPod?
It'll remember the last map or set of direction your were using. If you want to look something else up, you'll need a wifi signal.
If you want to store multiple maps, the only solution I can come up with is to take a screenshot of each one. Get the map up in the Maps application, then hold down the home button and press the standby button. This'll take a screenshot and store it in Photos for you to look at any time.0 -

Thanks for that. The screenshot idea will work for me I think. That's another little trick i've learnt!Matched betting proceeds so far: £505.000
