I see from the advertising video you can use Arcos5 as a sat nav, but it does not explain how. Have you tried this feature?"A nation's greatness is measured by how it treats its weakest members." ~ Mahatma Gandhi

well, i've just got back from the Apple Store. Im really impresed with the Iphone but when adding up the costs, we're talking £640 in total over the next 18 months! I'm pay as you go at the moment and probably use about £10.00 a month in phone calls. If it was a bit cheaper I would probably go for that.
I've just telephoned carphone warehouse and they recommended the Nokia 5800 and offered to send me one to try for 14 days! Didnt realise this service existed, rather good I thought.
I have also been looking at PDA's and Im going to check out the Blackberry Storm. My research continues........................

One of the problem with handheld & public internet access is its prohibitive cost long term. Device itself is massively expensive, plus they don't work very well to give you the wow experience.
Once you have sorted out your device, when you are in the States, t-mobile wifi vouchers is pretty reasonable. They do pay as you go vouchers...0 -

You can also jailbreak you itouch to convert it to a skype phone as per http://lifehacker.com/378511/turn-your-ipod-touch-into-an-iphone
This will also do msn tooGOOGLE it before you ask, you'll often save yourself a lot of time.

So why not buy an iPhone on Pay and Go? They start at £352 for the 8 GB model.

Well, I had the same idea. I've been out and bought the ipod touch. My OH's contract finishes in 4.5 months so I think I will get the iphone for him instead. He would use it for his business and we could put it through the books as an expense. I literally just want to be able to look up info on the net. Not too fussed about the phone bit and camera. I'm visiting New York and there appears to be hundreds of free wifi spots and if I get a pay as you go deal I think this would be the best option. Thanks for all your posts.

Given that it's a year and a half out of date, and written by someone who has never used an iPhone, I wouldn't worry too much about it. Oh, and they don't sell the iPhone either, but I'm sure that has nothing to do with it.
Anyhow, happy browsing!0 -
Battery and memory points are valid though. I hate the idea that I can't get at / replace/ upgrade either of these frankly vital components.Ubuntu is an ancient African word, meaning: 'I can't configure Debian'.0

Well, not really. It doesn't have "only 8gb memory", as there is also a 16 GB version. Apple charges £55 to replace the battery including labour. Hardly a "high fee". I've seen more expensive replacement batteries for mobile phones than that.
I particularly enjoyed "No Internet Explorer" though. If you get yourself a new Windows Mobile phone, you can while away the hours being frustrated by Internet Explorer 6. Cutting edge stuff.
Oh, and the one about "no native applications will be available for the iPhone any time soon". That proved to be 100% wrong to an almost embarrassing degree.
As I said above, it's just ignorant scare-mongering from a company that don't want anyone to buy an iPhone because you can't buy it from them. If they were selling them, you can bet your bottom they would be saying they're the best thing since sliced bread.0 -
I must say the costs of these portable wifi enabled devices looks so high. I'm not a fan of iphone either.
9' ASUS wifi enabled portable laptop costs just under £250 and it is highly compact, and most importantly it comes with a QWERTY keyboard loaded with win XP. Something the user will whole heartfly appreciate especially while chatting !!. Downside is you won't be able to carry them in the pocket!0
