Hi,
I'm based in Co Durham and originally from Teesside. I'm not aware of any in Teesside at all.
I'd suggest a trip into Newcastle, there's 3 in Stowell street and one opposite the Haymarket bus station. That's what we do. They have an excellent selection or both food stuffs and cooking equipment (the cool little soup bowls, china spoons, carbon steel woks that kinda thing) for really cheap
If you do, I'd recommend you don't eat in china town, but walk into the centre of town, past the monument, down Grey St til you get to the Coop bank, turn left down High Bridge Street and have lunch in Pani's. Newcastle's best kept secret. Brilliant Italian food for cheap as chips, proper trattoria atmosphere http://www.paniscafe.co.uk/

There are a few in Sunderland, off Fawcett Street, in the city centre and on Ford Terrace in Pallion.
Not as big as the ones in Newcastle though.
And do thumbs up fpr Pannis, it's fab.DEBT FREE! Sep '08/£9,800 in Oct '06 :beer:0 -
thanks.
Sadly the newcastle one is a bit out of the way for my usual travels, tho defo have to look it up as and when do get chance to go up there.
I'm actually going to sunderland tomorrow anyway (sunderland empire for mickey show for the kids)....is the place on Fawcett St easy to find and relatively near as hopefully get at least a look in? Oooh....also I'll be parking near the Empire...would it be a walking trip or is it easy to park the car in/near the market place (so I can fill it up)
I did find a link that seems to indicate theres one in middlesbrough too ( http://www.askyourneighbour.co.uk/q.php?tid=12433&cid=9&qid=141325 )
dated Jan.....dont get to travel there too often either but will have to find an excuse or detour to see what that place is like0 -
it looks like the one in Newcastle is about 12-13miles away from my work place. I might still make a detour one time soon if I'm going to do a huge shop there (want to get bulk white vinegar and bicarb soda and soy sauces - but also want to try lots of diff stuff too - as well as fresh produce like pak choi which you can't buy online on some of the sites).
Is the one in Newcastle easy parking too - or would it involve parking at one of the main car parks and then hiking over to it with heavy tubs and bags full of gear0 -
There's a few in Darlington, in Gladstone street, just off the bottom of North Road near the Northgate roundabout.Everybody is equal; However some are more equal than others.0

cool - thanks basmic....I often have to do some work at the Dr Piper house Walk In Centre in darlo so will have to find that one too next time down that way0

The two I am thinking of, are both on Gladstone Street - on the corners of Easson Road and Thornton Street, if I'm looking at a bird's eye view map right.

Hope that link helps clarify what I've said.Everybody is equal; However some are more equal than others.0 -
well I popped into the store on Fawcett Street seeing as its just down the road from the sunderland empire
Nice little store.....there wasn't the same range as can see on the online stores (no large amounts of vinegar or bicarb that I was looking for....and sadly no fresh veg produce I could see)...but did manage to get a few bits and bobs (some things I havent got a clue what they are
Soy sauce very cheap....think it was about 1.40p for about 800ml bottle of the stuff......and 10kg of fragranced rice was 12.50....lets hope the soy sauce doesnt taste like $^£$
Do any of yous know if the darlington or Newcastle main one sell the 5ltr vinegars and big 3kg bags of baking soda?0 -
