Fish Question, best place to buy and prices?

Hi all

It suddenly dawned on me yesterday, that we have little (apart from tinned tuna) fish in our diet, I would like to change that over the next few weeks, but know very little about fish in terms of types, prices and best place to buy from, ie fishmonger or supermarket?

Whatever I buy would have to come headless as I just couldn't dehead the thing (ewww)

So really i'm looking for feedback on fish in general, your ideas, suggestions most appreciated!!

Thanks xx

If we all had to kill what we eat there would be a heck of a lot of vegetarians amongst us.
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.

Ive been buying fish from the supermarket as Ive not yet been able to find a fishmonger open on a sunday (usually my only day off). Im not really adventurous but I have salmon, cod, haddock and tuna steaks (they are lovely!) on a regular basis.

Id love to go to a real fishmongers though - ive got a week off in March and intend to spend it going to places I dont get the opportunity to go to with working full time - so a proper fishmongers is on the list!

I would recommend you speak to people and get personal recommendations - but DO NOT under any circumstances buy fish from the supermarket (unless it is reduced and for the cat!) fresh is best, and there are some fabulous fishmongers out there that really care about what they are selling, the best way to find them is by recommendation of the people that use them.

    Good luck!
  • I buy my fish from Tesco as in Worcester it is the only place where you can get fresh fish. There is no fishmonger here-if anyone knows different please let me know.

I'd rather not buy it at Tesco, but I have never had bad quality fish from there, and I buy at least one lot of fish a week.

Don't worry about heads and guts MrsB, the fishmonger or person at the fish counter of the supermarket will do all that for you.Just say what you want doing to your fish.

Fish I buy regularly that are cheap are;mackerel(super-healthy),herrings,kippers,coley-an excellent white fish which looks a little grey raw but is white when cooked and fine for fish pie/cakes.
Other good buys are live mussels and herring roes(lovely fried with butter and garlic).

I like these things because they are caught in British coastal waters and as far as I know not in danger of being over-fished.

I also buy farmed trout and salmon fillets.Tesco sometimes sell whole salmon very cheaply. It looks huge, but if you ask for it to be sliced into steaks you can put it in the freezer.
BTW don't freeze fish if it has already been frozen.Ask first ;)

I buy mine at Tescos, they are really helpfull, and will dehead it and de bone it if you ask them. The one thing i would recomend, were ever you buy your fish, if you are near the fish counter, and can smell fish, then it isnt fresh (Morrisons are dreadfull for this, would never buy from them) everytime i go to the Tesco counter i cannot smell fish, even though there is loads of fish there, so i know its nice and fresh.
  • This site is very good for buying fish. It also has a lot of recipes

  • How much do you pay for farmed trout? There is a trout fishery near us and it is £1 a lb. I expect that is when they have excess fish. How long does fresh trout keep in a freezer?
  • I live about 8 miles North of Liverpool and don't know of a fishmonger anywhere near me, so I usually buy from Tesco's but I have to say that fish doesn't inspire me that much. I like tinned tuna and fresh salmon and prawns occasionally (i.e. when bogof) but can't say I like anything else. My Dad was a chef and would make kedgeree on a Sunday with yellow fish and it was divine but try as I may I cannot make anything resembling his receipe (and I have tried MANY receipes since he died!!). DD2 (8) loves fish though and persuaded me to buy a huge bag of crab claws and a frozen lobster from Costco at Christmas but they are still in the freezer cos I can't face them and don't know what to do with them!! Any ideas??

On leicester market you can get two whole salmon for a tenner. And the fishmonger will cut them up for you if you want. Overcome your aversion to heads and such. If you cant eat something with a head on remember they all have heads at the start. And buying whole fish is much better for the environment than getting something in a tray with most signs of it ever having been a living thing removed, plus you have bypassed a whole lot of middle -men in the process.
Some friends buy fish from a man in a van, see if anything similar operates near you.
