Can I ask what all this nonsense about 'authorised' and 'unauthorised' absence is?

In Poland, you simply tell the school that you're taking the child out of school and that is that. They can't say no - the parent is in charge of the child and is therefore trusted to do what is best for the child. If the child fails a year/exams, then it is solely their problem - not the school.

well that is not how it works here.

If a child fails exams it is the school's problem. It is reflected in the tables published for that school. The very tables which parents look at when trying to get their children into the best schools!
  • Haven't read the replies (and don't intend to from this final page) however as a teacher I really can't blame parents taking kids out during term time.

Personally I can't see what a school can teach a kid for 2 weeks that a life experience of flying, going to a different country/culture can't beat.

And as I have to pay the extortionate prices that are hiked up in the holidays then I can't blame a parent saving money and to be honest the last weeks in July are usually time for off timetable stuff.

However I do question parents who take their children out when they have an actual GCSE exam. That's just a bit odd!
    :D

Well your post does suprise me as you are a teacher! What gets me hacked off is the fact that there are numerous parents that cannot be bothered to send their kids to school, but when i ask for 6 days holiday before the end of summer term i am refused:mad: I think the government need to concentrate on the regular offenders and not the people who just want a once a year family holiday! I would also not dream of taking my kids out of school when they have sats or exams.
I have decided to write a letter to my daughters tutor a week before we go saying that she will not be coming in. :D

No jobs in Poland and we are all going to move to the UK, adapting your way of life? Hardly realistic, is it?
Why would I have to retrain? My diploma is valid in the UK just as well. It's EU, remember?

How could i forget - im reminded daily.

Still at least im smart enough to realise that the massive influx of EU workers has only hindered the UK economy further.

It amazes me that people cant get their head around simple mathematics.

Polish(or whoever) comes and works and earns money - Some of that money is then sent to Poland. Money taken straight from our economy and not put back in.

But thats another debate altogether - no need to derail this one further.

Excuse me - I am not a self appointed moderator, just someone who is fed up of the thread going off target by people who want to cause arguments, and bring other topices into it.

    Then report it.

And stop derailing this thread further by appointing yourself its moderator.

The teaching establishment should remember we dont all have the luxury of a 7 week summer holiday and a decent salary with little child care expenses.

I had to go to a childminder and then after school club from the age of 4 months until I could get myself to and from school and look after myself at home. There were countless occasions when we didn't have the same holidays so I got to stay there all week. It wasn't free. I never had the luxury of having my mum or dad pick me up or take me to school, because they'd already been at work at least an hour preparing for the job that they can only really aspire to a slightly above average salary in having completed 5 years of higher education to enter the profession, and having worked their knuckles to the bone in whilst there. Nor could we ever save any money and skive off school to go on holiday.

I don't see the problem in taking kids out for the last few weeks when you don't do anything anyway, but those taking the opportunity to take cheap shots at teachers need to get a grip if they think it's an easy job. I barely see my mum as she still works until about 10pm every night, having taught for almost 30 years, and some of the classes my dad has would reduce those making the catty comments to tears.

This thread has given me a bit of a laugh. I kept my kids out of school for four years and they thrived and have done well. I don't think two weeks is going to do much harm.

Just a word of warning to people with older kids about holidays in July. At the school my two eventually went to they started the next years work immediately after public exams in june to give them a head start for the following year. i.e. after AS level exams in May and June they would start working for A2 so July was a bad time to take a holiday as they would miss the stuff you think they would miss in September. This did seem to produce good results and the school has fantastic reputation and Ofsted results.

i'm taking my 4 year old son out of school at the beginning of June for a 2 week holiday to Florida. I have wrote to the school asking for time off but haven't had a response. He has already had two weeks off due to illness and his younger sister being admitted to hospital for a few days. I'm not too concerned and i'm going to ask his teacher for some reading books and any worksheets they may be doing at the time for him to read and write on the plane as it's 9 hour flight. To book this holiday in the school holidays would have cost another £1,000 which i was not prepared to pay.

I wouldn't worry and enjoy your well earned holiday, i certainly am.
