have little time for a lot of teachers - my sons is one such example. She went on strike last year with no concern to my childs education, his school has teacher training days in school time, closes when we have 1 inch of snow, i mean talk about work dodgers.

Just so you know - a teacher does not make decisions about the school closing for bad weather, nor does he/she have any say when the training days are. If you think teachers are work dodgers, maybe you should become one.

So will teachers all be working from 16 July to 3 September like the rest of us save one or two weeks off if we are lucky.

I've take my children out of school every year for between 5 and 10 days. I feel they benefit from travel, they both love geography and have got very open minds about different cultures and different people This is something that can't be taught in a classroom and has to be experienced. This year we are taking them out for 6 days before the Easter holidays and I explained that this is due to the huge cost involved during term time. My children are aged 10 and 13, both schools have given written permission for the children to go and have said that this will show as an authorised absence. Once my eldest starts his GCSE's I will not do this at this time of year, however I can not see any reason for not taking them out at the start of the summer holidays. Ask your school the reason why permission was not given and if it might be worth writing to the Governor's of the school to express your concern that such requests are just dismissed so quickly.

We will be taking four days off school and the HT said she prefers then to be off sick as then it is an authorised rather than unauthrorised abscence.

You maybe can't do that now?

PS meant to say my child's school organises trips for the last week of summer term so the najority of kids are away for the week. So basically it all stops that week and any child whose parents don't pay for the band/french/german trip and is left behind watches DVD's all week!

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhh How I love this coment!!
I took my kids out of school for 2 months!
That time they were 6,7,9 years old. They went to school in my native country as an experience to learn the language. This was authorised, with a little dificulty.
When we came back my children fell inthe speed(?) of learning as they were before they left. They were still the top in the classroom!!! ( do I need to say anymore? and this was a very good primary )
Teacher saied that they missesd alot, but what I could see, thye never missed a thing, infact the opposite.
If your child is keen and healthy, I would not worry about their acaeavement, they will catch up in no time, if they missed anything that is - lol!
My DD was bored to death the last 2 weeks in July- this is a secondary school! , all they were doing is watching DVDs every day . Therefore I will be taking them out of school two weeks earlier next year, because they will learn a lot more somewhere other that the grotty old classrooom.
There was one year where my kids would have been better off staying home, because the teacher was ill , but kept comming back ( so she could get paied) , they never found a solid supply to teach the kids, they had a new teacher every day just for playing. The kids learned ZIRO that year, Now I wish I could make them pay for that!
I would write back to your school explaining that you are not able to take time of work in term times, that is if you haven`t used your 10 days allowence .
Enjoy your holiday, your kids will have a wonderfull holiday of the country and spending time with you.

I noticed you said native country, this is one of my bug bears why are non british nationals (wording this carefully) allowed extra holidays because of their relations and connections in other countries, why couldn't your children learn your native tongue in this country and keep going to school here at the same time. What language is it? is it going to be of any benefit to them in britain or did you just use it as an excuse to take them away for 2 months.
I also take my daughter out of school for the odd holiday but i wouldn't dream of taking her out of school for 2 months and the school shouldn't have to keep her place at the school either.
You say your children are very clever, i hope your poor spelling is due to the fact that you were typing so quickly you made mistakes and no i'm not being vindictive or racist just pointing out a few facts.

Many of them will go in over significant times, eg exam results week, last week of the holiday etc.

However, if you want those holidays, as I said, why not become a teacher? You would then be able to choose during which school break you want to book your holiday ;)

I agree the last few days of every half term kids dont do alot...
I take my son out every year and never had a problem or been refused sure I was told my the school generally they do allow 10 days per year
good luck and I dont blame you, yes schooling is important but as we said its nearly end of term anyway...ENJOY YOUR HOLIDAY :D

( and we went with first choice and was amazed at what they learnt at the kids clubs, my son loved it and said it was just like being at school :) )

I think it also depends which LEA you are under as well. Funny thing is one of the other parents got given permission to take their 2 children out of the same school for a 3 week holiday to Florida! I really do appreciate everyones support on this,i really did think that i would get alot more negative comments. As i have said previously the holiday is already booked so irrelavent of whether i get permission we are going!! Another thing that irritates me is the holiday companies hiking up the prices in school holidays. I just about managed to scrap the money together for this holiday and could not have afforded the prices charged later July/August time.

I hope ypu have a brilliant time and pleased you've received so much support on here:j . I used to take my kids out of school all the time as I could not afford august. Now I do go In august, but that's due to them be in secondary school.

I think some people fail to realise that your childs chances of passing exams have a lot more to with their progress over all than missing two weeks.

Many of us are going through the motions every single day with our families, spending more time with people at work that we have to tolerate(well I do :D ) and If It means we can be relaxed and human, for however long with our loved ones, does It really matter when It Is?
:A Your Always in my heart, you never ever will be forgotten-9/9/14:heart2:

If 12 weeks holiday, snow, training days, strikes aren't enough then just do what a load of teachers are obviously doing:

Claim your stressed and can't be around kids.

Pretty severe especially with the number of schoolda s lost to teacher training

Actually, no days are 'lost' to teacher training, the 5 teacher training days were taken out of the teacher's holidays by Kenneth Baker. Pupils still attend for 190 days per year.

Who said 12 weeks isn't enough? Never heard any complain about that one:D

And it isn't the kids that cause the stress - read the article;)
“The sick days are nothing to do with children though, but the stress of Ofsted, disciplinary hearings, competency procedures and the endless supply of reform to change the way teachers are supposed to teach.”
