virgin broadband, cancelling

morning all,

should be getting virgin broadband sometime today (fingers crossed). however, i simply intended on signing up with them due to the free activation, and so will change isp as soon as possible.

as virgin.net requires a 30 day notice, does this mean that once it's activated, i have to give notice (today) to cancel it?

if so, is there anything other than the MAC code i should ask for? i know some people have had problems have had difficulities cancelling broadband with virgin, and so would gratefully appreciate any advice, as well as suggestions as to who i should switch to (for a 512kpbs connection). someone mentioned https://www.telecomplus.org.uk, and i'm aware of Adsl4less.

many thanks in advance.

you need to ask for a MAC code. you thirty day will start when you give the MAC code to another ISP. So when you sign up with another ISP give them the date of ctivation 30 days from the sign up date and that will serve as the thirty day notice. Beware 30 days dont start till you give the MAC code.

mm66, am a bit confused here. Surely the MAC code gets generated when giving notice to leave the ISP. So in my understanding, you need to do the following (correct me if I am wrong...):

    1 Sign up to Virgin
2 Give notice, once ADSL is activated
    3 Ask for MAC code
4 contact new ISP with MAC code
    5 wait.... (how long?!)

I guess that Virgin will provide the MAC code, once the 30days are up...mmh. The reason I am posting here, is that I am thinking to do exactly that.

Was with Metronet for a year, and was great. Specially the helpfull and immediate response on the Tech support side. You will not get a free modem, but at 35.00 (https://www.qtds.com) who needs to go for a measely USB thing.

As we moved flat, we are looking at another activation fee, as we're not willing to go into a contract of more than 3 months, plus I kinda like the inovation that Metronet brought about with their Pay-As-you-Go service.

The problem I face now, is that Virgin Net does not seem to recognise my BT No and Postcode as a valid pair. When looking for a number to call them on their site, a potential downside of Virgin became apparent - total lack of any No to call, other than automated message line.

Think I might spent some dosh and go back to Metronet directly. not very confident that Virgin is going to handle my cancellation and MAC transfer professionally.... mmmh

    just my 2 pence worth....

I face the same dilema, currently with metronet and about to move house, I got a tad excited when I read that there was no activation charge with virgin and 30 days notice.

Has anyone actually managed to do this and how did it go???

I have just gone thru the virgin activation and cancellation and shifting to adsl4less so i was giving my exact experience.

You call Virgin and ask for a MAC. They will have to email that to you since it is generated by another team this takes 4/5 days after you ask for it.

The thirty days actually start after the MAC is given to another ISP. The reason for this is(from what i was told) if there is any delay in the switchover or any problem in the process and the thirty day expire you would be without any ISP and start the whole process as a new customer again.

I beleive this is how the PAC code works on mobile phones also.

Anyways, this is the exact procedure experienced by me last month.

mm66, can you please tell us, whether you had to pay the 59.00 something pounds activation fee at any point. If not ath the beginning (free activation) then are they asking you to pay it now?! Sorry to ask again, but I think this is a fairly important part of the 'Virgin Signup fo one months then migrate to other ISP' process.

I am tempted to take the plunge to save 50 odd pounds, but not otherwise... (as surely are others).

Thanks for your patience in dealing with all the questions...
