HELP! Which places to visit in London?

Hi
We have decided to visit London in the summer holidays. I was thinking early August. There will be 2 adults and 1 8year old child.
We are travelling by national express as it is under £60 return, unless someone can suggest a cheap rail fare from Barnsley, South Yorkshire. We were going to stop 3 nights in a travelodge (have not a clue which would be best?) on a cheap room deal. Has anyone any advice/recommendations?
Has anyone any suggestions for places to visit such as the london eye and BPalace and the cheapest way to do it?
Also has anyone any hints or tips for cheap meals or drinks? It is many years since I visited the capital and want it to be a great holiday for us all.
Thanks in advance for your time. Any help will be appreciated!

The Science, Natural History & Imperial War Museums are all free & will take at least 2 days to look around fully!

I forgot to say , we stayed at the Covent Garden Travelodge on New Years Day - It is in a great location - you can walk to a lot of sights quite easily from there (British Museum,Covent Garden, Trafalgar Square,National Gallery, Oxford Street, Leicester Square,Thames(London Eye) etc.etc.etc.!!!0

Go to St. Paul's and climb up to the Whispering Gallery - you will love it. The views over London are fantastic and best of all it is absolutely free! Wander through St. James Park and stroll up the Mall towards Buckingham Palace. This
is a must for anyone visiting London. Check out the times for changing of the guard. and horse guards parade. This will be brilliant for your 8 year old.0
