Ah, didn't spot that re: vista - I'm guessing there's quite a difference between the two versions? As for why I'd buy there, for my sins they employ me so there is the attraction of staff discount! However, not worth it for an inferior product. Thanks.

There's not that much difference, Basic lacks the Aero effect-which many people don't like anyway.
I didn't say it was an inferior product, but like for like you can probably get it at Dell for the same price (they have endless discounts and offers-or look at the Dell Outlet store). If however you can get a staff discount then it may be worth going for it-but you cannot choose your own spec, you have to take what they offer.
I would also check what warranty and support you get if you buy through Tesco?

Hi I have been looking at laptops and get totally confused. I am a senior and a woman and do not understand everything that I read. A friend has suggested paying a bit more than my £400 budget and investing in a Sony VAIO> I have seen this one in Marks and Spencers and think it looks pretty good. What do you all think of them? http://www.marksandspencer.com/gp/product/B001KPWUG6/sr=1-1/qid=1236366571/ref=sr_1_1/280-8325563-7924410?ie=UTF8&node=42966030&m=A2BO0OYVBKIQJM&keywords=sony&mnSBrand=core&size=9&rh=&page=
I was choosing Marks because they have a 2 year warranty included. I have also seen this one for about the same price in various places

I hope I am allowed to do this on here if I am not can someone delete this please. Can anyone tell me in every day terms what is the difference between the two please? Can anyone tell me if these are good pcs and will have everything I need for basic internet use no games and not much downloading. Also anyone know of any places that they sell them cheaper and any vouchers or discounts anywhere out there. Or should I go with a totally different computer? Thanks Taffy

Ok, have to ask, what's the 'Aero effect'?

The official Windoze description is here:

Basically it's an attempt to make Vista look more like Mac OSX. In that respect, it's a failure.
Perhaps someone else can advise the other Basic/Premium differences, as I'm not a Vista user.

Aero effect is just the pretty interface, which puts a real strain on hardware.

Vista Basic is a complete waste of time, and to be avoided, only the cheapest PCs come with it, most distributors shunned it. Home Premium is the best "home user" version, Ultimate has all the features of all the version, Business is good, but doesn't have some of the Home Premium extras, but has business specific additions.

Unfortunately MS haven't learned their lessons with the multi-versions of Vista and look like making the same mistake with Windows 7, with a basic version which is rumoured to only allow 3 applications to run at the same time.

At least Apple got it right with OS X, one desktop and one server OS.

    More bugs. :D

Don't laugh at banana republics. :rotfl:

Ok, think I 'get' the aero effect. Will probably go to PCWorld on Monday to have a prod (not buy) at the various options as don't fancy buying something 'blind' only to find I can't get on with it. Dell have an offer on this week which looks good; just wondering if the extended warranty is worth the extra money?
