Flea Tablets

You're right - I should've said what measures I take instead of pressing the 'submit' button too quickly! Yep, I pick up all our poos, do a visual check for worms, and keep a very beady eye on her to ensure she's not eating anything 'unsavory' that might be a carrier.I didnt doubt you for a moment, Just really commented for anyone one else who wasnt worming and wasnt aware of the health risks to humans

Capstar and Johnsons4Fleas are the same product. Capstar was released first, presumably didn't do very well and was quickly rushed through to the OTC market. We only use Capstar when an animal comes in for an op and is covered in fleas - don't want the little critters inmy kennels or op room. It has a limited market where a rapid knockdown is desirable but it only lasts 24 hours.0

I flea treat monthly as I think prevention is better than cure & I read that fleas only spend 10% of the time on the animal (Dunno if that's true) so could be missed. Plus now I have the Dog & she's out on walks, wheras before it was just the Cat who never sees other Cats. I dunno about adding garlic to things tho, isn't it bad for them?0

I still refuse to put a poison on my animal "just in case". If it werent because he has a skin complaint that could be down to mites hes wouldnt be on advocate and once this round of treatment is over he wont be seeing a flea treatment again - unless we see fleas0

I don't think they'd be licenced if they poisoned the animal they went on, it does state not to use on Rabbits, so i'm suprised they're said to be toxic to Cats/Dogs, i'd've thought it's no different to us using chemicals on ourselves or even make up (Evil stuff!) is there a link to the problem with it? I just assume anything the Vet recommends & that's licenced for animals is safe?0

Im not saying it isnt safe, just toxic.
I have never said that its not safe
But then petrochemicals are liciensed for use in skin care - and are also known carcogenics.
Why would I slather carcognics on myself in the name of beauty? Why should I cover my dog in toxic substances "just in case"?
I have never ever stated that frontline or frontline combo are unsafe0 -
I'll have to look into that, i've had the Cat 9yrs & never seen a flea on her, the Vets never find any & she doesn't scratch, the Dog i've only had 3 months & the Rescue said they wouldn't do her monthly, only if she got fleas, but as they're very unlikely to get a bad outbreak of fleas & have the costs to think about I just thought that might be why, definitely something i'll look into tho!0

Im just the sort of person who refuses to treat for the sake of treatment.
Already theres threads here with people saying their vets are having trouble with treating fleas and fleas are becomming immune to the treatments.
Rather like us humans and our over use of antibiotics.
Sorry but in my mind theres no need to fix what isnt broken. We dont have fleas, Ive never seen a flea on this dog, hes had one tick which was removed with a tick hook and thats that. Worming I do because he eats raw, we live in the country and he loves to eat cow, sheep, horse poo, and I cant always be sure I pick up every trace of poo ever (there are occasions he does run on ahead and I cant find it when I catch up).
Theres nothing wrong with treating monthly if thats what you are happy with. Im just giving my experience. It doesnt have to be one way or no way. I think its good to discuss the whys and wherefores and not just accept that there is only one way0 -
Thanks for all the replies

I do think that flea treatments seem to be more "toxic" for some dogs, not others. Im just going to look up advocate and also read up on Garlic tablets.
Do you think raw garlic would be ok? They get fed raw food also, so I could blend up some garlic with liver or kidneys (they would eat anything thats mixed with offal).
I didnt know that you could get 6 month injections for this? Might also look into that. He doesnt have fleas at the moment, just to clarify. Just dont want to make him poorly every month by treating him.
I know my spelling is shocking  It is alot better than it used to be though :rotfl:0 -
I think garlic is toxic to Dogs but I dunno?0
