From the other thread (I'm one handed, cut me some slack :p)

As a DFW poster and a DMPer, I think that splitting DMPs to a sub forum is more important than the ongoing diary issue in the current climate.
We only have one thread which is for quick questions and support but increasingly newbies are posting their SOAs in that thread and getting lost. So I think that needs a sub-forum more, it's worked very well for IVAs and bankruptcy.

Hi fermi - I have just posted my 'proposal' thoughts on the main thread, before I saw this thread, so will, briefly, repeat them here:

The DFW board, and its sub boards, are currently among the most used forums on this site. As the recession deepens they will, inevitably, become both more used and more necessary.

Have we, therefore, arrived at a point where a review, even more radical than that proposed, is necessary?

I think that one answer could be to create a whole new section of 'Debt, Consequences and Solutions' rather than just being one board in the 'Pure Money' section of the site. That way we could have separate boards for Debt Problems, for initial and general debt questions, DMPs (currently one very quickly growing thread), IVAs, Bankruptcy etc. - Even, although I confirm that I would not like to separate them from the DFW board, one for 'Debt Diaries'

Each area would be 'Boards' in their own right, but under the 'overall' heading of 'Debt'

And we can all remain DFW 'Nerds'. ;)
I am NOT, nor do I profess to be, a Qualified Debt Adviser. I have made MANY mistakes and have OFTEN been the unwitting victim of the the shamefull tactics of the Financial Industry.
If any of my experiences, or the knowledge that I have gained from those experiences, can help anyone who finds themselves in similar circumstances, then my experiences have not been in vain.

    Hi folks,

I have to say my current thinking is to do a trial split of the diaries into a sub board of DFW but not a DMP sub-board as i think once diaries are split out that'll give more breathing space to breath.

    Im intending to call it

    Debt Free Diaries: Trial Board

To start with to make it clear its not permanent, and to try it for a month.

As people will appreciate theres a rash of views on it - and either way someone will be unhappy. I hope you'll be ok to let us give it a try.

When does a thread become a diary?

and herein lies the problem as people then won't put diary in their thread title just the same as people on the OS board put in OS to their title no matter the subject in the hope that it will remain in OS although not relevant to the OS board :D

sigh....I'm sick of this coming up repeatedly......I'm against splitting but I'm just at the stage now of sayin just do it, create a sub board generally dividing 'advice' and 'all things diaries/social/challenge related'..........to shut the situation up once and for all........ ........

I;ll say again what I said on Martin's thread:

I fully support splitting the diaries out. When I joined, I only ever posted in DFW and there were no diaries - I would spend hours posting on threads helping people and sharing ideas but as more and more diaries began I found them unhelpful, cumbersome, self-indulgent and a hindrance to helping people.

I wasn;t prepared to trawl through ten pages of chat to see if I could help someone in any way and I much preferred it when each question or milestone got its own thread.

People always prefer the status quo but hte reality is that DFW was less cliquey and served its purpose much better when there weren;t any diaries, so splitting them off will, IMO, make the board work much better for its real purpose, which is helping everyone, not just the regulars.

It's the newbies who suffer most from DFW being impenetrable and they are the people who most need the help usually.

  • I would be in favour of any measure which would help new posters to find help by navigating the site correctly. My needs and preferences should be secondary to what would be most helpful to the new people.

Rog's view that there needs to be a more radical overhaul has definite merit. It needs to be very clear to a new visitor that their problems paying off their loans or credit cards belong on the DFW board and not the Loans or Credit Cards board where they may not receive the right kind of responses.

Give DFW a section of it's own, outside of Pure Money and break that down into as many sections as are necessary.
  • I see what everyone is saying and thought i would add my tuppence worth.

When i first found this site, i posted on a diary (Hypno's) I then joined in with daily chat, discussions etc. posted on a couple of other diaries, then started my own. I don't believe DFW is Cliquey, we just chat to each other through daily or challenges and other diaries.

I also try and advise newbies, i often find they tend to post new threads late at night and often seem quite worried. I would also add that very few posts are left unanswered even if it is only to post an encouraging word or two.

I think if the board was restructured it would help find info quicker, but then again it may make some areas static and then people may not see posts that are asking for help. This is seen quite a bit on other boards and may make new posters more anxious.

    Just my personal opinion.
