Travelplan Direct Claims

Has anyone ever made a claim against Travelplan direct?
Their cover seems to be good and their prices cheap, but what are they like when making a claim?

Its underwritten by Fortis who have a good reputation for Travel Policies and claims, they normally do well in industry awards.
The small claims may actually be handle by Travel Plan Direct who I don't know anything about but if they chose Fortis as the underwritter it is a goodish sign0 -
Thanks for that, I did not realise that Fortis was involved.
I am very concerned with the reputation of Insurance companies since my son had a car accident and 6 weeks on he is still having problems getting any settlement.
I am now trying to get some feedback on any company that I use.0 -
If you are ever unsure who the ultimate Underwriter (Insurer) is just look for a Key Facts / Summary of Cover (These outline any benefits and major exclusions) or better still a Policy Booklet. The Financial Services Authority require brokers and insurers to make these available to you so you can make an informed decision when buying insurance. Its normally fairly easy to find who the Insurer is on these documents
Fortis have a good reputation for Travel Insurance, their 24 hour international assistance telephone line is one of the best.0 -
I am currently in a battle with this company for a cancelled trip to the Maldives in February after my father-in-law sadly passed away suddenly 3days prior to our departure.
I have lost count of the number of emails and phone calls I have made to this company and today I finally gave in and wrote to their complaints department (not holding my breath on that one).
52 working days since I cancelled the holiday and still no resolution - they are obviously trying to worm their way out of paying but I cant see how they can justify it based on my father-in-laws medical history.
As Fleetwood1977 alluded to in his original post, you only find out how good and insurance company is when you make a claim, my advice ........ STAY CLEAR OF TRAVELPLAN DIRECT :mad:0 -
Did your father in law have existing medical conditions that are connected to his death eg high blood pressure and then a heart attack?
Now that you have written to their complaints department they will have to treat the complaint in a regulated manner and report back to you within a set period. If you are not happy with their answer you can then take it to the ombudsman.
Have you tried ringing Fortis direct to discuss your claim as you may find it is TravelPlandirect who are causing the delay as Fortis are normally good.
You can find their contact details here https://www.fortisinsurance.co.uk0 -
Without going into too much detail about my father-in-laws medical history, basically he had been in hospital for >1year for treatment of pressure sores and a bad back (as a result of being confined to a wheelchair for ~25years).
Regarding the letter of complaint - having heard nothing since it was sent (not even a courtesy 'we are dealing with your request'), I phoned the Complaints Officer listed in my documentation only to be told 'I dont think they work for the company anymore'....

Are you sure about Fortis being the underwriter?, in my documentation I can only see reference to AXA...0 -
I assume it is this Travel Plan Direct http://www.travelplandirectinsurance.com/ their policy documents show the underwriter as being Fortis.
These types of companies often change the Insurer so if you have an older policy it may be with a different Insurer.
If it is in fact with Axa it might explain the problems with the admin as administration is not Axa's strong point.
It might be worth writing to Jessica who is the Telegraphs Financial Problem Aunt, she often has Axa claims to sort out so will have a contact their.0 -

Are you sure Axa are not the assistance company in this case = Fortis have an agreement with Axa to act as their reps for certain countries - save Fortis having offices in every country (simplified)C. (Ex-Pat Brit)
