Shiny Hair - How do I get it?

My mum made me feel 2 inches tall the other day, by telling me off saying that I have let myself go (I have a bit as I am a lot fatter than I used to be) but she was more bothered about my hair because she claims it has lost its shine. Now how do I get it back?

I use Redken shampoo which I have started using again because I can now afford it, I went through a period when I would use any cheapo shampoo mainly due to cost:rolleyes: I am also on steroid drops and have been since 1998 and will be on them for life and I feel sure that they have had an effect on my hair.

How do I get the shine back?

Sometimes when I change to a different brand of shampoo it makes it more shiny.
    Do you use conditioner?
Straightening my hair makes it more shiny too (I use ceramic irons) but I can't recommend this for everyday use.

mop (modern organic products) have a range called "glisten" that gives hair a nice shine. The shampoo and conditioner works well, but you can also get shine drops that you put on your hairbrush, then brush through your hair which is good for in between washes. You could also try their c-system range which is very moisturising, which helps shinyness.
Just want to point out that I don't work for them or anything- just really like their products!

As Liney said, it can help to change your shampoo. I've found that even if I switch to a different cheap brand it makes my hair nicer.

Try not to worry about what your mum says though, just as long as you feel good!

My hair is already as straight as a die:rolleyes: I do use conditioner but not on every wash. I have just gone back to using Redken - its something I used from when I was 18 right up til 2005 then I stopped and now I am back on it.

I haven't heard of shine drops but if they make my hair shiny then I will have to get some.

As for my mother - she makes all these remarks because in her eyes I am a complete failure:rolleyes: Still, that's her opinion and I don't really care what she says (I am 47 for gawd's sake and the way she goes on you would think I was 5:mad: ).

Hope you aren't taking your Mum's comments to heart too much. Its your life not hers.
Maybe taking special hair vitamins would help with the shiny hair?
Also just read that eating oily fish helps (salmon, mackerel and tuna) - its the Omega 3's etc.

Apart from when I was pg, my hair was at its shiniest when my water heater wasn't working and I had to wash it in cold water! Now that the hot water is back on, I compromise by doing the last rinse with tepid water. :D

Personally I only use the shine serums for special occasions, not every day use as I only wash my hair every other day (or it turns to straw) and living in london, the pollution sticks to the serum and I would end up with the opposite effect of dull hair. Brushing your hair through every morning and evening with a bristle brush distributes the natural oils and stimulates circulation in the scalp, which also helps shininess.

Am allergic to fish and I hate it. Maybe I should stock up on the vitamins. Thanks I will have a look.

It can't be any dearer than Redken:eek: I pay £9.76 per bottle - although I don't use much because a little goes along way.:D

Any long term meds can show their effect through the hair and nails.

A good balanced diet and lots of water will go a long way to making hair shine.

When washing, I always just wash the scalp. I wash daily in the shower so a tiny tiny amount of shampoo ( I need a medicated one as have dermatitis and it ruins my hair) and really rinse till squeaky clean. I only ever condition the ends. I also find keep a style that likes finger drying rather then blow drying helps although now I have longer hair and need to blow dry, I use a nozzle and dry downwards and finish with a cool blast

A tiny amout of shine serum if Im away out and want extra shine

use whichever products you can afford - but leave your conditioner on for a good few minutes so it has a chance to work and then rinse with cool water for lots of shine!
my straight hair looks good after a temp hair dye - i use a colour like my own brown, just a bit richer and redder to give it a bit of pizazz! Sometimes a little change can give you a lot of confidence.
