Have a look on the Channel 4 website for the Cook Yourself Thin recipes. When I make my stir-fry I use just Soy sauce and Oyster sauce, and it's fab. (I do use ginger, chillis and garlic in my veg mix...)
Alot of the CYT recipes are gorgeous, and you can substitute the more expensive ingredients quite easily if you want, and change the veg combinations etc.
I've used alot of their stuff, and find it really easy and tasty!Natwest CC - [STRIKE]£2545[/STRIKE] now £0 :j

Hi guys,

Hi jasperconran,
Any finely sliced veg works well in a stir fry. I use onions, carrots, mangetout, mushrooms, courgettes, cabbage, radishes etc....basically any veg I have in. You can also grow your own beansprouts very cheaply. See this thread: sprouting seeds**to eat**
There are more ideas on these threads that may help:

I'll add your thread to the first link later to keep the suggestions together.

Well, I buy the ready prepared bags, (although i expect these a cheaper way) and a quick search on MySupermarket says they are about £1.00, these two adults here and you would need half a bag for two servings. It reduces down alot, if you buy the bags they will only keep until the following night so make sure you are going to use them. (Like those bags of salad)
Or, Findus do a frozen one which obviously keeps longs, Chinese Wok Vegetables its called and is £1.49 at Sainsburys, again according to MySupermarket. You need half a bag of this for two peeps.
It does look alot but as I say it does reduce down, and I hardly ever finish my dinners0 -
Probably not very OS, but I bought a bag of Tesco's frozen stirfry mix as then I can use a small amount each time. I live on my own so buying each vegetable individually would cost more and wouldn't last and the fresh prepared bags don't last that long either!
I think they're really good as have a lot of different things in them, from what I can remember there was leek, pepper, peas, sweetcorn, onion, cauliflower, mushrooms (ick!), beansprouts, mangetout and more.
For noodles I tried using the cheap blocks of noodles (without the flavouring) and found them really nice as they absorb the flavours quite well. Not bad for 10p a pack, as they do me for 2 meals.Grocery challenge - Nov: £52/£100

This is a bit of a cheat, but using fresh ingredients does involve small amounts of lots of different things.
STIR FRIED BEEF
Serves 2
INGREDIENTS
250g of beef
400g tin of mixed stir fry vegetables
1 tablespoon of sesame oil
120g sachet of black bean or oyster sauce
METHOD
Cut the beef into very thin strips. Open the tin of mixed vegetables and drain off the liquid.
Put the oil into a frying pan or wok on a medium heat. Add the beef. Fry for about 3 minutes until thoroughly cooked. Stir frequently to stop it sticking.
Add the vegetables and sauce. Continue to fry for another 3 minutes. Stir frequently to stop it sticking.
Serve with boiled rice or noodles.
ADDITIONS & ALTERNATIVES
Use pork instead of the beef.
Use sunflower or vegetable oil instead of the sesame oil.The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in my life.0 -
Hi
My food order is coming tomorrow and I've just realised I don't have the ingredients for tonights tea, also I don't want to visit the corner shop as they are so over priced.
I have 2 chicken breasts, egg noodles, 1 carrot and a tin of sweet cornI might even have a bit of soy sauce!! Is that enough to make a stir fry or will it just be too bland? Anything else I can add... bearing in mind I have no more veg in and very little in the very empty cupboard and the OH can't eat garlic
My mind is blank... got no spuds either, or eggs. I do have bacon though :rotfl:
Help :eek:Even if you stumble, you're still moving forward.0 -
Put the noodles on to cook. Peel the carrot then, still using the peeler, peel strips off it so that you have carrot ribbons IYSWIM. Then cut the chicken into strips and stir fry it in a little oil, when it's cooked add the carrot & sweetcorn and briefly stirfry them all together so the carrot still has some crunch to it. Add a good slosh of soy sauce and pepper (if liked) then I always tip the drained, cooked noodles into the wok/pan to soak up all the juices and serve :T HTH0

I never used to manage to make decent stir fries but I came across this recipe and it's become a firm favourite.

In our opinion it needs mushrooms, carrots and cashew nuts but apart from that it's great with pork/prawns/turkey.
Hope this helps someone!
Just to update: this recipe tastes MUCH nicer if you substitute 2TB sweet soy sauce and 50ml of water for the regular soy sauce."Finish each day And be done with it.
