Hello dear experts,
Sorry to sound clueless, I am trying to convince the wife to get rid of carpets in favour of laminate flooring. She is worried about cold etc. and I said we will put underlay, under the laminate flooring, then I thought, is it the norm??
kind regards,
seb

There is some thin underlay type stuff on a roll that's sold to be put under laminate flooring, but it's not the same sort of stuff you put under carpet.
Your wife might be right to worry about the cold. My nephew moved into a house with laminate flooring. Within six months it had been carpeted over, his wife feels the cold and she couldn't stand it any longer.
Do you know anyone who has it so you can check it out? You don't want to make an expensive mistake and your wife insists carpet is put back in a few months time. However, I'm sure I've seen that some laminate is fine to have underfloor heating beneath.0 -

Decent underlay with laminate works well. Much easier to clean too. I wouldn't be without my laminate now, just wish i could have it on the stairs .4 Stones and 0 pounds or 25.4kg lighter :j0

We had laminate in the dining room - it was freezing when on concrete floor even with the thin insulation!
Redoing it with fibre board underneath now

Hi I used similar from B&Q in our kitchen recently with 8mm laminate. Warmer than the original ceramic tiles. It is over a mixture of quarry tiles, concrete and chipoard (Don't ask). Not sure it isas warm as carpet but much easier to clean!0 -
If you have concrete floors, you can use either the think underlay that comes in rolls (2mm thick), or the underlay slabs (5-7mm thick) which are thicker.
If you have floor boards, you need to use the underlay slabs (5-7mm thick) to allow for variations in the floor boards...If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands

laminate flooring is only warm, if you have underfloor heating
we have the thick, foil backed underlay, and its still freezing - OH should have listened when i said we needed underfloor heating with a concrete floor and laminate
when will men learn!

I have laminate in every room in my house except the kitchen, bathroom and obviously stairs and landing.
It is all to do with what underlay you get for it. I bought the best, the really thick green stuff which is apparently the best you can buy. However all my laminate is over floorboartds.
Laying it over concrete may be a different matter, but I don't know.
It is not cold at all, very warm and I have no underfloor heating.0 -
We have laminate flooring over the whole house except the stairs and landing. it is colder than carpet, we put a rug in the lounge so the kids can lie on the floor when watching TV. We all wear slippers in winter.
When I clean it, I think that when we had carpets, all that muck was in the carpets, yuk.0
