If this is the first DD then you may find that it appears when the first payment goes out. If that's the case, there isn't really any window for you to cancel the payment...0

You can't just stop DDs if by doing so you are breaking a contractual obligation.
More to this than meets the eye!0 -

What nonsense! Of course you can cancel a DD!I spent 25 years in the mobile industry, from 1994 to 2019. Worked for indies as well as the big networks, in their stores also in contact centres. I also hold a degree in telecoms engineering so I like to think I know what I’m talking about 😂0 -
If it's Monday this week that you set it up, as RayWolfe said FD might not even be able to see the Direct Debit. They can't cancel something that as far as they're concerned isn't there.
He's wrong in that you can cancel the DD, it'd be up to the beneficiary to chase you for payment. But if you're not intending to make any other payments, that probably IS a problem.0 -
Thank you for that clarification. What I meant was that the other party to the contract will not stop the DD if the OP wants to one-sidedly stop the contract. Remember, she posted: "I guess they just wanted my money and thought I was stupid!"ShelfStacker wrote: »He's wrong in that you can cancel the DD, it'd be up to the beneficiary to chase you for payment. Of course the payee can stop a DD.0 -
Just keep checking your online banking each day and as soon as the DD details appear, click the delete button. That's it, done.If you will the end, you must will the means.0

For piece of mind, in addition to daily checks on your account, in your position I would also post a written DD cancellation instruction to First Direct. If the DD is then paid for whatever reason after they have received the written cancellation instruction you are guaranteed to receive a refund of the money taken (as in such a situation First Direct would have processed the DD payment without authorisation).0
