You can cancel it on online banking. If it is due in the next few days though it may of been processed already and may be why you can't cancel it. Try cancelling again after the next payment.
Make sure you notify the creditor after cancelling.0 -
Is it really a direct debit, or is it a continuous payment authority from your debit or credit card? A direct debit is where you gave the payee your sort code and account number and agreed with them how much they would take and when.
A continuous payment authority is where you gave the payee your card number, allowing them to make debit card payments from your card on a regular basis. People often call these direct debits, but they are not.
If it's a direct debit then First Direct can cancel it for you, by phone or online, unless it's already going through, or unless you've only just set it up and the payee hasn't sent First Direct the details yet.
If it's a continuous payment authority then FD can't cancel it for you. How are they to know that any future debit card payments haven't been agreed by you? You will need to get the payee to cancel the arrangement.0 -
Hi Dave and Earthboy,
Yes it is a direct debit, Igave them my account and sort code over the phone and agreed an amount. but that was only Monday this week.
When I contacted my bank they said there was nothing they could do, they could not stop it and I would have to cancel the creditor who would have to agree to cancel it.
Sounded strange to me. I received from the creditor this morning the confrmation but maybe it has not reached my bank yet.
Maybe I misunderstood my bank! May be I need another cup of tea to sort out my frazzled brain - or perhaps a gin & tonic, long with lots ofic
Again thank you!

If you set it up this week, it's very unlikely your bank has been notified and therefor they have nothing to cancel. Make sure you cancel this with the people you set it up with.0

If you can't contact the company, then phone the back every day to see if the direct debit instruction has been set up. As soon as it has, get it cancelled. If the company has defrauded you, you will be able to get any money back too through the direct debit guarantee.0

Hi,
thank for replies...yes I have contacted the company who refused to stop the dd and yes it has notappeared at my bank yet so I will keep every day1
Again thanks x:A0 -
Why would they refuse to stop the DD? That goes against the Direct Debit guarantee that states you can cancel a DD at any time.I spent 25 years in the mobile industry, from 1994 to 2019. Worked for indies as well as the big networks, in their stores also in contact centres. I also hold a degree in telecoms engineering so I like to think I know what I’m talking about 😂0
