in Credit cards
Currently in Perth WA.
Tried to purchase from a reputable jewellers a couple of days ago using my Halifax One Visa card (masses of credit and no isues).
The payment was refused twice, rang the number on the back of the card from shop and was told there was NO problem with the card and the reason must be a local one, possibly a routine security screen so the shop should contact their bank.
The shop were happy to do this, their bank is national, one of the biggest in Australia she was told that they (National) do not deal with Halifax, she also mentioned that they did not deal with Lloyds either.
Has anyone ever heard of this???
I always thought that if there was a visa sign and no issues with your card, there was no problem.
What would have happened if we had been in a restaurant with no cash and no other card.
Do we need to check which banks our bank `deals` with before going abroad and ask before we try and purchase `sorry, but can you just tell me which bank your visa transactions are processed through.....`
Luckily I took a mastercard with me which went through OK, but still very embarrasing.

Whose card was the Mastercard?"Some say the cup is half empty, while others say it is half full. However, this is skirting around the issue. The real problem is that the cup is too big."0

I think your bank probably misinformed/lied to you. Card issuers will routinely block 'suspicious' transactions and I have had this problem before with certain cards abroad.0

I found out the hard way years ago in France and Germany that you have to tell the card issuers that you will be using the card abroad just before you leave the U.K. it's like mobile phone roaming you have to tell them as well.Aiming to be debt free....but still off target0 -
Hi
Did you inform the credit companies before you left? The last few times we've been to the states I have contacted them and have never had any problems.

I go away quite a bit, but every time I go away I let Nationwide put a note on my account telling them where and how long I'm gone for.
In the past I've used credit cards abroad where the retailer told me the card had been refused. I would contact the card provider and they woudl say we asked the retailer to contact us to verify the person. Naturally the retailer not understanding / not bothering, just told me the card had been refused."An eye for an eye leaves the whole world blind" - Mahatma Gandhi0 -
Unfortunately jewellery shopping amounts to a significant percentage of credit card fraud and retailers have to be extra cautious when processing card transactions.0

I had my egg card blocked while I was in New England a few years ago. It worked OK the day after. I queried it with egg and they said it was because they had a 10-uses-per-day limit on the card (we'd been doing lots of shopping). Are you sure your card doesn't have anything like that?

It more than likely just the fact that ist a foreign transaction for one of the highest risk purchases possible, untraceable, high value jewelry.0
