Advice pls - how to password protect internet access?

Hi

I am having a few probs with my 18 year old's attitude at the moment and as a consequence of his continued behaviour I plan to deny him access to the internet from home until such time as he has earned this privilege.

Currently the set up is that his 360 is directly hooked up to the wireless router and my desktop pc and laptop have wireless access.

Ideally what I would like to do is password protect access to the internet so that he cannot access it at all but I still am able to. But I want him to still be able to access the computer for his college work.

I contacted my broadband provider, Eclipse, they do not offer this service and suggest I contact my router manufacturer or computer vendor. While I am in the process of doing this I thought I would throw my problem out to others on this website to see if anyone can come up with advice how to achieve this or offer an alternative solution altogether.

In the interim I password protected the pc but when I allowed him access to do course work he set up his own user account, also as an administrator, and password protected that account.

I was able to delete his user account without having to provide his password but I don't know enough about computers to know if he could do it again and then delete my own user account (which is the computer default account)?

I have to deal with this issue quickly because it has the potential to explode in to a much more serious issue if I don't handle it right now.

My last resort is to cancel my internet connection completely and if it comes to it I am prepared to do it. I'm not tied in to a contract but I know it will be expensive to set it up again with my current provider (I'm really happy with Eclipse at the moment as it ticks all my boxes but this one).

Any suggestions are most welcome.

change the encryption key of the router and just don't tell him the new one.(it looks like ALL devices connect wirelessly)
How to do this depends on the router...

No I believe from what the op says the 360 is connected directly(wired) to the router and the wep or whatever key doesnt affect this I think.

I dont have the answer and having had eclipse as an a ISP I know how uninterested they can be in customer queries.

I think if you still have the manual for the router this will be your best bet, I also think that there is a way to limit administrator to only one user on the pc - check help or control panel guidance.

Thank you so much for your replies!! I don't understand most of what you just said but it does sound like there is a solution, now to just figure out how to implement it.

The router is a voyager 2091. His 360 doesn't connect wirelessly, it is plugged in to the router.

I have no idea where the router manual is. Also I did check on the control panel for how to limit administrator to just me but it doesn't take much to flummox me and it flummoxed me.

What I really need is an idiot's idiot guide.

I find it hard to believe that an internet provider would not offer this option. Do you know if any of them do?

    Thanks again.

On some routers, MAC filtering only works on wireless connections. I have had Dlink and Linksys like this. The Belkin I had however, applied the MAC filter to wireless and wired ports.

They do - just not what you want ... your modem uses a password (along with your username) to get online. All you need to do is not let the router remember this... downside is that you'll have to enter it everytime you want to go online.

I would go down the MAC filtering option, and deny access to all, but your computer.... hide the router when you don't need it (maybe the easy option).... or... simply cut the ethernet cable that is attached to the 360 (of course he could get a replacement, but you just cut that one too).

A short term alternative could be - subject to how affordable it is to you and how good your mobile signals are at home - disconnecting the router/modem at home and buying yourself a mobile broadband dongle.

This may not meet your needs of course and is only put forward as a suggestion.

    Hope you get it resolved
