Well, it doesn't sound as if she's estranged from her parents or that she's eligible to be assessed as an independent student.

She has 2 options; she can either get a job or she can cut down on her outgoings. What are her living expenses at the moment?

She is not extravangant leads a sinmple life and contributes to rent, food and also travel on her oyster card as it is across the other side of London, also all of her materials and the types of paint , brushes etc and canvas and that are bloody expensive in themselves.. Nothing else, she is quite happy and content staying in.

I do not have a breakdown per se but as I spend a lot of time with her I know not a penny is wasted

How did she survive from the age of 16 to now if she did not even have a basic bank account? Your girlfriend should have been registered for council tax, benefits or for future eligibility to vote etc. at her ex-boyfriend's address. She also may have needed to be declared for the purposes of the ex's JSA claim. Two people cannot possibly live on one JSA payment so she must have had some other form of income.

If your girlfriend lives with you now she will have to declare your income to claim a means-tested student grant or loan and vice versa. I also assume she is now registered at her current abode, and you are not subletting? You may not think her life is extravagant, but the the facts suggest otherwise. Even if you spread your girlfriend's present income over twelve months, that's £100 a week: it's perfectly possible to double that with a part-time/ summer job. There are entire families living on £4k a year (see DFW board)!

I agree totally with your post except for the highlighted part. She would only be assessed on her partner's income if she was an independent student. From the information we've been given so far, she isn't and will still be assessed on her parents. You don't become "independent" by shacking up with someone!

Thanks for the post, she was living with her ex boyfriend since 16 1/2 until late last year and to be honest it is not my business how they survived and I know I don't particularly want to know everything about her previous boyfriend.

She still visits her parents on a regular basis but she cannot go back there to live for whatever reason and again I do not want to delve into that but that is a no no in her going back. Since she left her previous boyfriend she has been staying with a friend of hers and also at mine but in essence she is NFA. The only thing in her name is a bank account that still shows her boyfriends old address and she has not registered to vote or the electoral role as she thought she was not entitled during that time and also she never bothered to claim hardship income support below 18. She did do some work when she was younger but that was just cleaning. Any other thoughts?

More cleaning? There's always plenty of work in London and generally well paid.
