ballyblack and Marty J, they may be dear to run but those crappy energy saving things are rubbish (far too slow to light up, and so dim) and are destroying my eyes slowly but surely. I am stocking up!
There are different wattages of energy saving lightbulbs. We have them all over the house, and some of them are crazy bright and take only a few seconds to get to full brightness. They also come in different temperatures for those who find them too cold.
Conventional lightbulbs have remained practically unchanged since their invention, and waste an unbelievable amount of energy (i.e. money). Almost all of the electricity you pay for is turned into heat, not light. All the lights in our house put together use fewer watts than one 100 watt lightbulb.
Sorry to get preachy; I just think conventional lightbulbs are a huge waste of money. You pay more for the same amount of light.0 -

Yes I agree with Marty J
This must be the ultimate oxymoron, people going onto a money-saving site to enquire how best to waste money by heating a patch on the ceiling

I'm big enough to admit when I'm wrong. I just tried a 20w energy saving light bulb in the place of a 100w one for the first time and it's the first energy saving light bulb that I've found to be as good as the ordinary light bulb. There are still places where I won't use one, but in this case it's doing the job well and I'm happy with it.Norn Iron Club Member No. 252 :beer:0

Bigcammy - which brand, how much and where from?
There are certainly places where they aren't appropriate, and they do have a flicker that annoys some people which other people don't notice, but there are also good ones and bad ones, and I also think that a lot of people who think the bulbs are dim haven't replaced like for like - ie the '100w' energy savers are quite new and rare, so a 100w incadescent would have been replaced with a '60w' energy saver, which is obviously much dimmer!0 -
I got it in Tesco Express, it might have been their own brand, was described as a stick? It was about 97p, great value I thought.Norn Iron Club Member No. 252 :beer:0

They were 5 for 40p a while back, and a 21p VAT deduction came off, making them 29p for 5!!! I bought 10 :rotfl:
So any ESBs under 20W are useless? I would tend to agree, haven't even tried the lower wattage ones! :eek:Get to 119lbs! 1/2/09: 135.6lbs 1/5/11: 145.8lbs 30/3/13 150lbs 22/2/14 137lbs 2/6/14 128lbs 29/8/14 124lbs 2/6/17 126lbs
