I've done that and I've checked it and the things I was told to remove have gone - but when I look in notepad it keeps coming up with the original one - the time and date at the top are the same!!!

  • ok , lets try something different;
    • Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
    • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
    • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
    • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized)

  • I see you have the ask toolbar installed on your computer - this is considered questionable by so people as it comes bundled with software.

if you wish to remove it then uninstall it via the program features icon from within the control panel.
  • As the others have pointed out there is nothing else obvious shouting out.

thanks for all your help - (Ask toolbar now uninstalled).

One final question - I'm assuming (hoping) that everything should be ok now and I'm 'protected' against viruses and general 'baddies'. Is that correct? and how often do I have to do any sort of 'housekeeping' now that I've done all this?

Id recommend using FIREFOX in place of internet explorer and use the NOSCRIPT plugin

    Download FIREFOX
    http://www.mozilla-europe.org/en/firefox/

    NOSCRIPT
    https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/722

NOSCRIPT works by blocking ALL website scripts (Which is how dodgy websites infect your computer ~ the easiest way to catch a virus after downloading). So you need to UNLOCK all websites you use for them to work properly (Like this one for example)
I personally set it so that it DOESNT show messages about blocked scripts. Then all you need to do is use common sense. Think to yourself 'does the site work ok'? If so it doesnt need touching. But if you wanted to watch a video on youtube say, youd need to unlock parts of it. Look bottom right, If theres ANY red on the 'S' symbol, then something is being blocked.

(You will also need the other addons like FLASH etc)
    http://www.google.com/tools/firefox/toolbar/FT5/intl/en-GB/index.html
    https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/browse/type:7

Scan alternating weekly with Malwarebytes, SAS and Avira
