Oh my! Sewing machine won't stitch and my dress is needed for Friday! Please help!

Options
Hi, first post but desperate for some advice. I got my sewing machine out from the depths of the cupbaord to make a dress for friday - set it up to the best of my memory and it won't do it! I have loaded the bobbin and the threads are sorted but when i ask it to sew the needle just leaves little holes and no stitch! Cant think whats wrong - was sat there until midnight trying. I really really want to make my dress but it it has to be finished tomorrow (its a very simple design and is all cut and ready to go but yes time is tight!)
Any suggestions gratefully received other than buy one - thats not very MSE!

PS I was very pleased with myself too as the fabric I got years ago in a charity shop for about £1 and the pattern a found in another charity shop maybe 4 mths ago for 30p - with the thread and elastic this very hip party dress will cost me less than £5! If it gets made!

Anyone you can borrow one off? Maybe post a want on freecycle and see if someone would lend you one? Apart from that, all I can think of is by hand (which I know will take you ages) or maybe seeing if a charity shop has a v cheap one? It sounds like it's doing what mine does when the bottom thread isn't set up properly so it doesn't pull the top one through, have you got some instructions? If not, someone on here might have some (sure I've seen the thread just can't remember where!) Worth double checking to see if you have definitely set it up right!
Scar tissue that I wish you saw, sarcastic mister know it all, close your eyes and I'll kiss you cause with the birds I'll share this lonely view.

    Hi thanks for answering! Lol!

I havent got instructions and maybe the bobbin isnt set right, but I can't remember - its been a while! I bought it second hand and it came with a completely different instruction booklet. I haven't even got the model name with me to check online until home again tonight.
Panicking cos really want to wear this dress and I dont want to buy a new machine as I am sure this is fine - its the owner who is not! Freecycle wont be quick enough in my area, but thank you so much for getting back to me.

When yours goes wrong is it because you have loaded the thread wrong or the actual bobbin?

Not an expert on sewing, but when I've had similar problems it's been to do with the tension being too tight and pulling the thread out of the needle. On my machine there's a wheel on the top where I can adjust the tension - that usually solves it!

Hope you manage to sort it!

Thank you, think I tried that last night - was a bit flustered! Maybe any suggestions I get I will use for a process of elimination!

Mine won't sew if the bobbin isn't in right, you have to put it in the right way round then pull the bobbin thread up with the top thread IYSWIM.

I downloaded an instruction book for mine, I googled it.

Good luck! Otherwise do you have something like Primark near you, they have some nice, cheap stuff in there.

Have you threaded the top part right? it needs to go through a little loop before going through the actual needle else the tension wont take up when the sewing arm goes up and down. IF it is self threading it generally needs you to hook the thread and pull it through, well mine do and I have two of different makes.

Hi, thank you, but what does IYSWIM mean? Ok so maybe I need reminding which is the right way round for the bobbin?
