I use soya mince (59p) a packet in Sainsburys 1 pack makes 2 large family meals in our house but Holland and Barrett do it as well (not sure of the price there). Our days are happier when we give people a bit of our heart rather than a piece of our mind.

Being a veggie, have used soya mince for more years than I care to admit! Mr AM is a dedicated meat eater unfortunately. ::)
Always had a frugal touch about me, early days of marriage, would make up batch of veg spag bol, one of meat spag bol and freeze in individual portions in freezer. Took some out, discovered both had mushrooms......aaargh veggie version. Picked out mushrooms in his, served up. Only admitted to my gaffe after he had eaten it. From then on, spag bol/lasagne/chilli con carne etc are all veggie in this house, so have saved myself a lot of time (and money), over the years due to honest mistake! Also, valuable lesson learned in labelling freezer contents! :-[
Did try to make him mince and mashed potatoes with the soya mince, but didn't get away with that one. However, a little soya mince sneaked in to any meat mince does work. Soak soya mince in boiling water for about 5 mins, drain, then add to browned mince. Try using up to about 1oz soya to 1lb mince first. (Think that 1oz dried soya mince is roughly equivalent of 4oz mince.)
Buy dried soya mince in local grain/health food shops, it can be called tvp (textured vegetable protein).0 -

is this frozen? i couldn't find in our sainsburys. any help appreciated.0 -
No it's dried and in Sainsburys it can be found near the dried kidney beans etc. As Anne Marie says just soak the dried mince in some boiling water and then use in your normal recipes. Works best in spicey dishes. In Holland and barrett just ask I have always found the staff there very helpfulOur days are happier when we give people a bit of our heart rather than a piece of our mind.

Another thing I add to mince to bulk it out & lower fat content (whilst also adding protein) is a can of baked beans. The sauce adds extra flavour, too.
I have also used soya mince, but dh can detect that at 50 paces, and doesn't like the stuff, however well I think I have disguised it.0 -

While you're on the subject and while everyone's in chicken curry mode, could I ask a question? I've only just remembered i've got a takeaway chicken korma and rice in the fridge that my sister left in there on Saturday. :-/
I think I'll have to throw it but does anyone think it might still be ok to eat for lunch? ::)
Personally, I would never ever reheat take-away food. Its not just the meat either. Rice can be dangerous if it is left and can give you terrible food poisoning. (It starts to grow micro thingys on it!)
