I've got a couple of cures to deal with the itching
    1) Get the chemist to mix up a solution of calamine cream (NOT lotion) with 1% menthol. It cools down the bites and eases the itching. GP told me this years ago. Only trouble is it's fresh so doesn't have a long shelf life.

    2) Not as good but worth taking on holiday - one of those clicking gizmos that work by making static electricity. Hurts like blazes though if you miss the itchy bit and hit normal skin!! :D

    i don'tlike those clicky things bluddy agoneeee:mad:

but the other thing sounds good.

also if you discover the bite right away put ice on it - that can stop it swelling

any ideas on when you have been bitten and not taken anything

just got back and been bitten rotten and like you swell up.

I would normally take piriton but due to work not allowed to as may cause drowsiness grrrr

    Im itching like hell
    LOL

Vitamin B tablets work in a similar way to brewers yeast. We live in Spain, and the first year we were here my wife got bitten a lot. The doctor prescribed Vitamin B tablets and last year she only had a few bites. For some reason I don't get bitten anyway.

Having said that, when she was bitten we went to the local pharmacia, and showed the pharmacist the bites and she sold us a cream called "alergical crema". It was about €7. Its absolutely brilliant. If you put it on as soon as you notice the bite, it stops itchings straight away and doesn;t swell up. We always some handy now. It's also very good for any other skin inflamations as well. I now slap it if I have any skin problems, and it clears most things.

Its a corticosteroids base, and I think the base ingredient is Betamethasone, so I think you could probably buy it in other countries but as a different brand. My experience in Spain is that if you go into any pharmacy and tell them the UK brand, or main ingredient, they have a huge encyclopedia (or online access) of worlwide brands etc, which they can then relate to a local product. I would guess it works the other way.

If you google "Alergical crema" there;s a lot of information.

    Hope this helps

Thanks for all the tips. I live in the north of scotland yet I get bitten by midges etc throughout the yr, with nice allergic reactions. :( I'm sure the beasts actually cross oceans to feast on my blood!

Its currently Feb and snowing, and this yr i've already had 4 cracking bites.. Been hunting for some tips for summer! Heading to canaries in 3wks also, so hoping any beastie bites won't spoil my hol. I've tried nearly all creams, spray etc so will give the Brewers yeast a go. At the mo i have a gadgety thing which is supposed to suck the sting out, but doesn't always work.

Have you tried the Avon "Skin So Soft" as a deterrent? It's got to be the one in the green bottle though!

I can second marmite - my bf was going through a phase of eating it everyday at breakfast and didn't get bitten once. He now starts eating it a couple of weeks before we go (to Spain) and I don't think has been bitten since and he used to get a load of bites. Unfortunately now my daughter gets all the bites he would have had as she won't eat marmite!

here's a handy tip for anyone who suffers an allergic reaction to mosquito bites like me

if you get Brewers Yeast Tablets (from Holland & Barrett or health food shop) and take them for a couple of weeks before you go on holiday (i think its 2 three times a day or something) then keep on taking them when you are on holiday the mozzies don't bite you!

honestly! for years I have looked for a cure but THIS IS IT:j

IF I get bitten I swell up really badly so I am chuffed to bits that this doesn't happen anymore with the brewers yeast

and no, before any smart alecs come along, I don't smell like a pint of beer:rotfl:
tried it, the !!!!!!s apeared to love it?
