Ok, so hypothetically if i left my gas hob burning (smallest one on lowest setting - its a rangemaster) for 24 hours how much would that end up costing me?!

ok, so not hypothetical, just me being a dumbass... :rotfl:
First win (October) - Apple Ipod off a radio competition
November - new nokia mobile phone, £250 electrical voucher (both radio comptitions)
March - 2 cinema tickets to see 27 dresses (radio again!)

    At full blast, I just estimated my smallest ring to use in the order of 1 kWh. IE, it would cost 24 x tier 2 unit cost. Less than a pound (and that was turned on full.)

    (Test it empirically yourself (if you have an imperial meter). Turn on the ring and see how long it takes to move one tenth of the unit dial. Took my meter a tad over two minutes.

    2 mins -> 0.1 cu fit
    Divide this number of minutes in to 60. 60/2 = 30
    So in 1 hour -> 30 x 0.1 or 3 cu ft
    Now 1 imperial unit is 100 cu ft so my ring uses 3/100 units per hour
    1 unit is about 32 kWh. 32x3/100 or 96/100 or 0.96 kWh)

    I think. (Seems a bit high - a one bar heater? Doesn't seem to be that warm.) Anyway, that was turned on full. Don't have the patience to wait for it on minimum. Maybe tomorrow morning's porridge...

    The lengths people go to to help on these boards is commendable

    It obviously depends on the particular hob in question but here are the figures for an Electrolux EHG673-EHG 680 4 burner hob which is a typical domestic appliance.

    small burner: 1.0kW max / 0.33kW min
    medium burner: 2.0 kW max / 0.45 kW min
    large burner: 3.0kW max / 0.65 kW min

    ive just had a new boiler installed and the gas fitter said the pilot light on the old boiler would cost roughly £75 per year as it was continuously on.
    im estimating it would have cost you only £1.50 ish?
