Cost of laying concrete in back yard

Options
Hi,

How much do you think it will cost to lift up a 4.8 metre X 3.8 metre area of broken old loose concrete/cement and lay fresh concrete down?

I posted on MyHammer last night and got a quote of £995

This is just a section of my terraced house back yard which I'm trying to tidy up.

Personally I would do that myself, what with the weather warming up, it would be a nice little job for spring.

Alternatively it might be cheaper for you to clear it yourself, A skip would cost around £140. Then employ a competent handyman to lay a sub base and concrete. You certainly dont need a builder or driveway company for this relatively simple task.

For that size concrete slab, 100mm deep, this is a rough costing:

    Skip - £140
    Ballast - £120 (3 crane bags)
    Cement - £80 (18 bags)
    Shuttering - £25
    Hardcore - £?
    Labour £300 - £450

I would say £700-800 would be a good price.

Assume two days for two guys to do the job. If they are 100quid per day guys expect the above material prices to be higher delivered to site.

This is only your first quote. I would hold out and let the quotes come in. I would check and measure that they are going to lay 100mm if thats what you want. They may reuse some of the broken stuff as hardcore if its strong enough. If you are in a terrace and don't have very good access this will slow things down too.

Thanks for the advice. I would love to do it myself but don't know if I'm competent enough for such a task. But I do agree that I only need a DIY handyman to do this really as its a no major job.

Its not the whole back yard that needs doing just the bottom 3rd. One end to join up with the rest of the yard surface and the other end to the edge of the property/street.

Plenty of access for trucks with builders bags :)

More quotes, dont do it yourself. Dont forget to install a drain or something.

I did ours in the garden for the shed, by hand mixed in a wheel barrow. Good to do, but 22 bags later and one sore back the next day.

Pay someone and marvel through the window at the level concrete..

Well the MyHammer post has ended and I only received two quotes. The lowest was £970 :(

I wonder if I break up and dispose of the old surface myself will make the job alot cheaper or not.

Make an anonymous phone call to the police telling them you think the house owner has buried a body under the garden ... they'll send some chaps round immediately to dig it all up for you :)

There is also mybuiler which i think is a bit more popular, worth a try if you only have 2 quotes. Or ratedpeople (this one you put the price?) although people still quote you their own. Must admit i have had no success with either of these.
