Using Internet Cafes?

Hello all,

Just wondered whether anyone has used an internet cafe? I know this probably seems like a strange question! But I need to order something online, and can't do it from work - would my credit card details be safe if I did the order in one of the internet cafes?

Thanks for your help!

I personally would NEVER carry out a secure transaction like that in an Internet Cafe, theres no way to be sure that no-one has installed anything dodgy on it !!

  • Yes, that's true, I think I shall have to give the company a call and see if I can order by phone instead. Thank you for your advice on this, it's very sensible!

    Kind regards,

If you need internet access for looking up sites etc. though you can go into any (I think!) library, I've got instant access when there's been no-one there or you can book a slot. They seem to be mostly free at least for the first half hour.

  • Anyone can put a keylogger on the ps2 port, or install keylogging software, or just look at your browsing history, and potentially capture your name address, phone number, credit card details, emails etc.. I wouldn't touch them.

If you do any of the above wirelessly, people in the vicinity may be able to sniff the same details as they pass through the air, as it unlikely that they will be encrypted, unless you are using some form of vpn

Complete rubbish - People use internet cafes all the time to order flights, check bank accounts, buy things online with credit cards etc. They also use the local libraries - .

I have never heard of any key logging etc - any decent cafe will run anti virus, anti spyware etc and set the computers to wipe the cache and history daily.

You can wipe it yourself before you leave.

Just ask the guys who run it or observe other peopleusing the computers. They will all be entering passwords for their mail etc. The business wouldnt survive if people were getting scammed.

I know about key logging. This is about internet cafes.

Scare stories like that don't bear out in reality. Like I said cafe owners and the Library services don't let people attach loggers to USB ports or keyboards. They run professional spyware and anti virus protection and they check their machines.

Its in their interest to do so.

May I ask if Albert has ever actually used an internet cafe ?

I only set up and ran one for 3 years ...

  • No I haven't, and I never will, for the reasons mentioned.

May I ask if Fraserca has ever seen a PC infected with a keylogger (targeting every major bank in Europe) that no Anti-virus or Anti-spyware software was able to detect?

What software did you use to scan for rootkits?

What software did you use to wipe the cache?

Did you send everyone a follow-up questionnaire, 2 years down the line, asking all your customers if they have been a victim of identity theft, or credit card/banking fraud?

  • Pure panic and alarmism.

Companies are making a fortune out of alarming the public about this. Fact is they are making far more out of this than anyone with malicious intent.

Marvelous how we all let these so called 'experts' affect our behavior.

  • I'm sure companies are making a mint out of it. But to treat the issue as hype is ignorant.

Are you saying that spyware doesn't exist, and keylogging doesn't go on, and bank accounts aren't being accessed illegally?
