I can't understand why canon dell lexmark etc are allowed to keep producing cheap printers that cost a fortune when it comes to buying inks just promoting a throw away society

Doesn't the new WEEE EU act (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waste_Electrical_and_Electronic_Equipment_Directive ) mean that manufacturers have to take back their old rubbish? Would like to see this used to sort the market out :)

Also, many printers come with half-full tanks of ink, and buying a printer because you get ink that's worth more than the printer is silly "Lexmark logic" (Lexmark are one of the major makers of cheapass printers with extortionate ink carts).

Consider this; A and B both sell printers. A charges twice the price that B does for identically-sized cartridges (£30 vs. £15). Everything else being equal, it's a no-brainer that B's printer is cheaper to run and therefore the better choice.

However, both manufacturers include one ink cartridge with their printers. A's includes £30 "worth" of ink, but B's "only" includes £15's worth. The more A overcharges for their ink, the better it looks.

"OMG! A's printer costs £30, but it includes £100 worth of ink!!
I'm going to buy a new printer from A"!
