Putting olive oil into my son's ears - advice?

Teenage son finally admitted that he doesn't just ignore me, he sometimes can't hear what I'm saying. So off to the GP with his Dad, GP says his ears are 'gloopy' and put olive oil in them to clear it up.

"How?" I ask. No idea.

"Should I warm it up first?" No idea.

"How often?" Now this one, they think the answer is just the once!

The good news is that I do have some olive oil. The bad news is I don't have a medicine dropper or syringe of any kind. Thinking of using a straw rather than the baster, but any tips appreciated!

    Hi,
It sounds like your doctor was really not very helpful at all ,what exactly did he mean by gloopy :-/

And to tell you what to use but not how often is irrespnsible of him.

The syringes can be bought at the chemists if that's any help :) I used to get them to syringe the medicine into my grandsons mouth when he wouldn't 'open wide' ::)

I think she means there is a build up of wax which may be affecting his hearing. But as I refuse to take my son to the GP any more I can't be sure!

No, the chaps seem to think they know the answer to this one, it's just the once I need to do this.

Yeah, I used to have one but they outgrew it! Can't even find a medicine spoon any more when I want one for cooking!

Thanks for the tips. I'm considering sucking it up with a straw ... and I'm sure warming it slightly would be more comfortable. Nothing in my baby and child handbook, there never is when you need it.

My apologies misread the post :)

    Found this http://!!!!!!.co.uk/d54o

Put two drops of warm olive oil into the ear,(twice daily)plug it gently with cotton wool and wait five minutes to let the oil work its way into the wax

When we were kids and had waxy ears my Mum would warm a bit of olive oil in a teaspoon over the gas hob. Just tepid verging on warm. (If it starts smoking so you could fry chips it's TOO HOT ;D) Slowly pour into ear and put in a piece of cotton wool to soak up the stuff that will run out. Best to keep head to one side for a few mins so the oil stays in and starts to soften the wax and then sleep on the other side so the gunk will run out into the cotton wool. HTH

  • Just a quick add on Olive oil better at room temperature, if you go to your local health centre or pharmacy and ask for syringe for oil in ;D ;) ears I hope they would oblige ( I would if you came to mine!) Good Luck!

I'm sure they would! He used to let me give him the once over with the clippers but hasn't for ages, doesn't want to go to the barbers, when you ask if he's growing it long he just says "I dunno." Teenagers, who'd have 'em!
