It seems Saudi oil production peaked in 2005, this is bad news for anyone who thinks normality will return, when Saudi peaks, so does the world. I've been looking into this subject now since 2004 when Matt Simmons published his book Twilight In The Desert. Most people I talk to either laugh it off/bury their head in the sand. Well I believe it's on the horizon now and is inexorably heading towards us.

Nuclear Fusion as a source of power to replace oil is, at current estimates at least two decades away, if ever. All other current forms of power have zero chance of filling the gap for 6 billion people. The Oil Drum can be a bit of a heavy read, but it's worth looking at.

Should qualify that as I'm sure I haven't read all your posts (I'm not a stalker, promise.)

Should be ok at least 50+yrs worth of world oil left, tar sands remain relatively un-tapped and massive.

Oh dear, not well read on the subject I see, well it is your opinion and I respect that. I won't go into the old tar sands debate or the dubious URR of the KSA, if anyone is interested in the subject there is loads information out there. I will say that their is far more than 50+ years worth of oil left, just at nowhere near the levels to support the global population as it is.

The government doesn't "invest" in any source of power. It is undertaken by private companies.

Blame the private companies? Where have i heard that before:think:.

If the government invested in rewarding renewables, the UK would be in a more sustainable energy position going forward.

Only trouble with tar is it takes massive amounts of energy to produce, defeating the object to some extent.

To quell demand perhaps the price needs upping?

    ITs a Frikkin LASER!!!

Hope they perfect it and turn valuable oil into worthless black goo. That will give the Arabs something to whinge about.
  • If peak oil is so close does this mean that governments are hoarding oil while it is cheap?

No, governments are burying their heads in the sand, hoping that someone will come up with a 'Eureka' moment.
