Hi All,
I have a broken telephone socket after I dismantled it in order to move it. The problem is that I do not know where the wires now go. Can anyone help?
I have been following the instructions here:
http://www.wppltd.demon.co.uk/WPP/Wiring/UK_telephone/uk_telephone.html
But they do not seem to help.
Are these the correct instructions?
Thanks,
Pete.

Have you put the wires into the sockets as it tells you to?
Did you disconnect all wires or just some?
According to the link:
The out going wires for extensions should be

Why not go round to a friends, unscrew their master phone socket (with their permission obviously) take a photo of the wiring and then screw it back up again, then go back to yours and look at the photo...If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands

Have you tried to connect the wires as shown in the diagram?
I cannot say for sure if they are correct without unscrewing mine to have a look BUT if you have tried and it will not work have you used one of the little plastic tools to push the wires all the way into the connections? The connections inside have a bit that strips the plastic sheath off the cable as it enters and this makes sure that the wire is exposed and gives a good contact. Also if you are reusing the same bit of wire it may be that the previously exposed bit is touching something else that is causing a problem so if it`s long enough strip back the outer sheath and expose new wires and cut off the bits previously used.

ok... first of all its illegal to be playing around with the BT side of the master socket. on newer master sockets (NTE5) with a removable face plate - thats all you are really allowed to touch.... get caught playing with the back of a master socket or move it without BT's permission can land you in deep trouble....
ok enough of the legal stuff.... if you have disconnected the cables at the back of the master socket then unless you can remember what pairs you had connected - its going to be quite difficult. Usualy BT run a number of pairs to a house for adding more than one line or for sorting out a faulty pair (they will just swap the cables with another pair instead of having to dig it all up!).
The cables at the back of the master socket coming in from the outside are not always the same colour - they can be different depending on the cable or the BT guy who installed it first of all.
If that is ok and the phone works from the master socket (tip: plug a corded phone with no ADSL filter into the master socket and dial 17070. Select the option for a quiet line test to listen out for any noise. Any noise will cause issues with broadband and needs to be raised as a voice fault with BT to do further tests.
On your side (on a NTE5 socket - this is the faceplate that you remove to show the test socket) - the cables should be wired up as per diagram on the website - HOWEVER DO NOT INCLUDE THE BELL WIRE! connecting the bell wire is a known source of interferance on lines and can cause your braodband speed to be pants! However not all the connector colours will be the same. Best thing to do is to find out which socket the cable in question runs to, open that up and see what collours are connected where - then connect the same up at the master socket.
The cables do require a punch down tool to get them to sit home.... however ive managed to use a screw driver to push them down in the past with no problems - not the best way and the punch down tool costs a few pence from places like B&Q....0 -
basically only number 2 & 5 pins are used for incoming, for just the 2 active wires.
and always make sure any BB connection/router is made at the master socket box, and not at the slave box.Get some gorm.0
