Nokia E71 with Googlemail - push email or not?
Hi
I'm looking to get an E71 next month. However this review
http://www.whatmobile.net/Reviews/NokiaReviews/153682/nokia_e71_review.html
States "You can also connect to a service like Google Mail, but it doesn’t support the free IMAP push service, forcing you to poll the server at fixed intervals instead. This is a disappointment, especially as regular polling could impact on the battery life."
Yet
http://email.nokia.com
Seems to indicate I can have push email with Googlemail on the phone.
Can anyone clarify? If I can't get push email with it I'll probably stick with BB.
Thanks

I have an E71 and Googlemail just polls every 15 minutes. There are no options that I have found to set it up for push email.LBM : March 2008

Thanks Tiger - do you find it polling every 15 mins has much of an effect on the battery life?0

There is push but with a few catches.
The E71 has the same Nokia mail client that my E51 has which supports both POP3 and IMAP4 - so you can have push email.
it works. But it disconnects from your server after 30 mins. This is at this very moment driving me nuts and I have been googling for a few days looking for a solution.
Note that Birdstep SmartConnect is now FREE from Nokia Downloads off your phone - this has stopped me pulling some of my hair out now whereby you can set up an access point group (mixture of Wifi and network allowed) with priorities that it uses.
Now, the email.nokia.com service is also push with a slick new client which is lovely to use. A later release will allow HTML mails (the built in client in my latest E51 firmware deals with HTML mails as attachments that open in the browser - it works quite well).
But the negatives - well this is a service Nokia will charge for once it goes live. They have said this. Additionally, it just stopped working on my Gmail on 28 Feb. Tried to reinstall but to no avail.
So I've gone back to the built-in client and just remember to reconnect every so often.
Grrrrrr. Will be truly great once it's all working. Major advantage of using IMAP is that your actions happen 'on the server' (so I delete a mail on my phone, and it disappears on my open web Gmail on my PC, for example). Disadvantage is the 'always on' which drains battery if you use WiFi like I do (but it's really not that bad, especially if you recharge daily).
Polling using POP works a treat, and will be less draining than having a constantly on WiFi. On the downside, it's 'offline' - so you delete or read a mail, and it'll sync next time it connects, hence my willingness to persevere with this IMAP business.

That would depend on your tariff and network, not on the handset.0 -
I have the Nokia E66 and found that the emoze application (http://www.emoze.com/en/index.asp) works for push email. It can be set for interval or continuous checking and Gmail is supported though I've not tried it as I don't have a Gmail account."Who throws a shoe, honestly?"
