This exact same thing happened to me a few weeks ago. My OH had to take the U bend off (I tried but it was too tight for me). Inside it had calcified. Nothing was going to clear that! Went and got a new U bend, cost about a fiver, problem solved.

Thanks for all your replies...we're both home now, so we're going to take the u-bend off when he's watched the first half of the Liverpool game (men!!)

I did pour lots of hot water down before but it didn't work, even though I put the plug in the main sink and put a heavy bottle on top, the water still leaked into the main sink.

I'm not looking forward to taking this u-bend off...i've a feeling it's going to be pretty gross :rotfl:

    Shall report back later :)

You could try a method my mom told me about - I have used it with good results. Put a cup or two of washing soap - the one for clothes into the plug hole or outside drain and then put a litre or two of vinegar - i just got the cheapest one I could find in the super market. I left it for a few hours and then poured boiling water into drain and after a few atempts it worked wonders. This helps dissolve the fat and hopefully clear the drain. It worked for me, hope it does for you, Oki

Why! oh why! do people persist in thinking that the best way to clear a blocked sink is to pour chemicals down it. It is so easy to remove the waste trap, especially the white plastic ones now in use. You do not even need a spanner as the connections are hand tightened. Sure it can be a bit messy, but all you have to do is to stop being so sensitive. I always find the cleaning out a blocked waste is very satisfying. Just make sure that you have a bowl to catch the contents of the sink and the waste. In future, make sure that as much food waste as possible goes into the bin and not into the sink waste.
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.

When you take the u-bend off it will be full of water.

Don't pour it down the sink !!

Lol we've all done it, so learn from our mistakes.:rotfl:

:rotfl: @ tuggy - now that would have been funny!! :rotfl:

Okay we took it off and no wonder nothing would get rid of the blockage, it looked like a big piece of cheese!! It came out really easy though...you want to see a pic? It's gross - you have been warned!!

    Told you! :rotfl:

The u-bend was perfectly clean apart from that (all the chemicals no doubt!) I'm not going to use those expensive drain cleaners anymore though because they have absolutely stunk out the kitchen and did no good at all (although my sink has never looked so shiny ;)) I'm going to be extra careful about not putting fat down the sink and put boiling water down once a month as suggested earlier :D

Thanks for all your help and advice :D

I had one were the sink was slow to empty, and also ran back into the washing machine.
I took off the u bend , that was clear, but the pipe leading through the wall to the drain had a dead terrapin lodged in it.
It couldn't have fitted down the plughole, so it must have crawled up the pipe from outside, to escape the cold one night, then got stuck.
