Hi I've been trying to burn a dvd disc all morning but keep getting the message 'medium error' but I don't know what this means or what it's pertaining to
I don't even know which discs I should really be using, -r +r etc etc it's all so confusing. At the moment the discs I've got are cheap ones came from woolies and they say DVD+R on them, sometimes they will work but it's hit and miss and this morning they just don't want to play ball. I'm using nti cd and dvd maker which I just drag and drop avi files using data backup and it's always seemed to work before to burn home movies etc I tried using nero on trial but found it way too confusing with having to convert files etc and so went back to nti cd maker but now I keep getting this error message and it's so frustrating not know what to do.

Your PC does have a DVD RW and not just a CD RW?It's taken me years of experience to get this cynical0

Well yes it can sometimes be like a black magic art. You are burning a disc that you want to keep a backup, so don't use cheapest that's the first problem. When you are making a CD try setting the burn speed to X4, and do not use the PC for any other task. You will find that the CD/DVD writer works best with only a few brands- the manufacture will use the best available for their testing purposes. All disc are not the same - some will work just fine and go on providing backups, - others will not.
I use software called Gear DVD Pro and just works and is easy to use and does what I want it to, not the other way round. Not free but there is a 30 trial. I stick to what works and not heard of NTI CD Maker- sorry.
Why are you converting files that's not a backup is it??
"Medium Error" is the CD/DVD itself I would guess so that needs to be changed.
TDK is my preferred supplier0 -

I've always used the back up facility so as to put the movies onto disc so I can watch them on the dvd player or send them to my mates in USA to watch. They are avi files and it's very hit and miss. Yesterday I managed to get it to burn one avi file to dvd via using back up to disc and that plays fine in dvd but this morning it just keeps spitting out the discs and they are the same dvd's as I used yesterday. I am really probably not using the best way to put my movies onto dvds for watching but I have tried nero as I said and it was so complicated, someone on here had told me to change my avi files to vcd files using nero so they can be watched on any dvd but I just couldn't fathom what to do there were so many different options with nero I just want something simple and free so I can pop these movie avi files onto disc.
So to cut a long story short I am trying to put the films onto disc because I dont want to watch them on the computer but on my dvd.
Yes I do have a dvd write to answer the other poster

Verbatim disks are probably the best you can buy in the high-street. As you've discovered, cheap disks are cheap for a reason.0

You need to convert them to VOB files so that they can be viewed using a normal dvd player
DVD FLICK will do the job for free
http://www.dvdflick.net/
Then you need to burn them to disc so IMAGEBURN is another free program. Id Suggest burning at 4x to lessen possible errors

Thank you very much I will have a go at this and let you know if it works.
Only problem is I'm still stuck with 30 of these woolworths discs and can't get out to buy any different ones so will try first and if I don't succeed with have to order some online another poster says use verbatim so I'll try and get some of them.

Hi I'm confused it doesn't have a tab for converting to VOB just avi, dvd, mov, mp4, mpeg, wma, flash, 3gp and rm???
Also it says that an banner of their company will be placed across the upput file unless I activate the programme by paying for it, sigh this isn't happening I don't think back to the drawing board.

DVD FLICK is free. I think youve probably clicked the wrong link to download

That's not quite right. DVD Flick does both the converting and the burning to disc. Just takes one tick in the right place.
By the sound of it, she doesn't wish to create DVD Video at all, but just back up the .avi files.
Which is fine, as long as her friends have DVD players that handle MPEG4.
Burn Data Disc would have been the option to choose with Nero.
VCD files? Who suggested those?0
