Cooking big batches of soup ideal for winter time
Also keep an eye on offers for fresh stuff & value lines

£2 worth of whoopsie bits combined with store cuboard & freezer will keep me going for 3-5 days.

I am currently working my way through a whoopsie chicken @ about £1.20, and bags of whoopsied carrots, parsnips , new potatoes, peppers, cherry tomatoes, of which the toms were the killer at 39p and all the rest at 25/30p. There is a enough for six evening meals, and several lunch sarnies and both chicken and veggie soups, for about £2.80.

I'd say we spend about £80 to feed three of us (including a pregnant lady) for a month, and this includes cleaning stuff and toiletries. And we eat fairly well (balanced, nutritious, tasty)! The key is plan for everything, plus we always go bargain hunting. Many thanks MSE forum, it's really very inspiring here!

I can't believe everyone spends so little, I must be really rubbish and I go to the butchers, farm shop and supermarket it takes me about 3 hours! I suppose the £30 wine bill doesn't help...what does everyone else spend on wine? My cousin (3 children plus mum and dad) spend £175 Tesco per week, £150 Costco per month i.e. toilet rolls etc. and that does not include meat bill (£30), wine bill (vast amounts) or cigarette bill (I don't smoke). I probably spend £150 per week for the 3 of us then £100 for a big stock at B&M Bargains a quarter. we make all our own food never buy ready meals and meal plan... where am I going wrong?

I am on the Grocery Challenge and I am aiming for £100 a week to feed a family of 5. We don't drink so that includes food, cleaning stuff and toiletries. I have been spending £120 a week and this is my first week on the challenge and I will gradually bring it down over the months.

What sort of things are you buying for your £175 in Tesco?

We like a glass or two of wine/beer as well which I include in the grocery budget:beer:. We put around £400 a month in our grocery account which has a debit card.
We're a family of two adults/two children. I make most of our meals from scratch, do at least 2/3 vegetarian meals a week. I get a veg box 3 weeks out of 4 and get most of our meat/chicken from the local butcher. Once a month I do an online shop at tesco/Sainsburys and get all the household cleaning stuff/dried goods/non-perishables (along with some wine). I then do top-up shops as and when - usually from the local grocery stores.
We also use our grocery budget to subscribe to a Wine Angels fund at Naked wines (£20 per month) which gets us a case of wine every quarter - although we may need to top up inbetween:whistle:

Mine downfall too :o We stick to the wine offers of 3 for £10 and that does us the week, last week I managed to get a 3l box for £10 so was well impressed - today I managed to get 4 pint cans of lager for 50p each so dh is pleased but he's not allowed to have them until the weekend :D I also now have white wine with soda (or actually its value sparkling water at 16p for litres :D )

I'm seriously looking into making our own!
