Can you offer lower price on rent?

Hi,
Currently looking at renting somewhere which i have never done before, and was just wondering if it is normal to negotiate the price per month, if the property has been sitting there empty for a while.
Also can you negotiate the minimum contract, i.e. 3 months instead of 6?
Thanks

I can't see a reason why you shouldn't make an offer, but I've no idea what general practice is regarding accepting offers...#145 Save £12k in 2016 Challenge: £12,062.62/£12,000.00 Beginning Balance: £5,027.78 CHALLENGE MET

Not sure how easy it is to lower the minimum contract length, but we've always put offers in for renting.
One place was advertised at £595 and we got it for £575. The one we are in now was £675 and we rent it out at £625, a saving of £50!
However if you were only wanting 3 months instead of 6, they might be less likely to negotiate on the rent.0 -
We got 50 quid off the rent...
I went in there basically said:
1. We havwe good jobs, we both have stable ish professions... my company made a profit last year.. so im looking like a good tenant..
2. We wish to stay for 1.5 to 2 years at least so you will have less messing around.
I kept to my guns and he accepted ... result £450 instead of £500 a month
We were in 1 bed furnished property... for 495... now we moved to a 2 bedroom unfurnished property for 450.... so the money we save in petrol/rent we can outfit the flat with and actually own the furnishing etc

Definately negotiate. The last place I was in I argued when the landlord tried to put the rent up by £30 and he backed down. The place I've just moved in to I got £25 a month off - I'd asked for £75 off but unfortunately needed to move fast so wasn't in a strong position.0
