Which is cheaper - Oil or Electric?

Which is cheaper for heating the hot water tank - our Oil boiler or the Electric immersion? I guess that oil must be, as the electric has to be produced by oil/gas/coal in the first place..... it must be less efficient.

However our oil bills halved when we switched over.

Electric is only cheaper if you have Economy 7 and heat water at night rates.

We used to use our immersion heater overnight on economy 7 in the belief that it would save oil.

When I actually worked it out it turned out to be much cheaper to go onto a normal electricity tariff and use the oil as we used far more electricity during the day than at night.

I have hear too many stories of dishwashers and tumble driers catching fire to ever put them on at night.

Obviously depends on how many tanks of hot water you get through in a day and how modern your oil fired boiler is.
