You sure it's the phone and not that your broadband has become congested?

Certain broadband providers are useless for using VoIP on, such as TalkTalk, also when using VoIP you have to make sure you aren't uploading / downloading at the same time.

You say the the phone was OK talking to other internet users, but not when talking to users on landlines, that sounds like a problem with the tesco service, which is known to be ropey.

Have you tried the phone using another service such as VoIPStunt? They offer a few minutes free to test the service.
It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!

Shes on NTL cable but she has a linksys wireless router, shes connected herself though as the router is in her room but at the moment there are 2 other people using it wireless although she still hasnt encrypted it yet so not sure if anyone else has tagged along if that makes any difference.

She hasnt tested the phone with any other service just yet and she wasn't uploading or downloading anything else at the time. She said its been going on for a while now and shes had to use her mobile instead. She said shes had to plug it in and out often and log on and off to try n get it to work then sometimes its ok briefly but goes funny again, also it just cuts off all the time.

She could plug her bfs phone in could she on her laptop to see if his works ok on his but not hers? is that possible with tesco phone?

She does have spywareblaster on there and spybot adaware and avg if they make any difference too.

If they change the phone will her number change?
    Thanx

If she's already registered with Tesco (which she has to get the service to work), then there will be no change in number, as the 'phone' isn't really a phone it's just a peice of plastic housing a soundcard, microphone and speakers, so is a case of just plugging the new one it.

If she is connecting to the router wirelessly and the use phone is then connected to her PC then it is highly likely there will be problems, especially when there are other people using the wireless side too.

Even if she is connected hardwired to the router, as the network is open (which is rather silly) then anyone could be using the broadband, and if open most probably are, as when people find open networks they use it to download !!!!!! and films etc, because it will be the person who's broadband they are using who will get the flak.

Without securing the wireless side and ensuring everyone on the network is download / uploading when you are on the Tesco phone, you are going to get good results.

She is hardwire connected and hopefully she will get it encrypted asap (tonight if possible) also I've told her to do some general maintenance on the laptop as she hasn't done so for a while.

I did think if others are using the wireless network from nieghbouring houses that it could effect it and maybe as it wasn't so bad in the first place when the others were not in the house over summer. They have now come back ready for uni

I've been looking into encryption for her and have had various advice but for a start she will just encrypt then she may do access control, not quite understanding the long passphase thing yet but somethings better than nothing at the mo.

Once everything is settled there will be 4 people using the wireless system including herself and most of the time she will remain hardwired

  • If the Tesco network is getting bunged up, she could use the USB handset with one of the SIP providers, Sipgate are really good, from what I have seen so far.
Hardwired may not be too much of an advantage, as the wireless side, even split 4 ways, will still be faster that the broadband 'pipe'. As Bex says it all depends what others are doing at the same time.
What type of router is your daughter using, some have a facility to allow you to prioritise voice traffic.
Remember in addition to people doing dodgy downloads over unencrypted wireless, they could potentially have access to the contents of her hard drive if file sharing is enabled. Using an Access Control List (Would that be an ACL List bex :) is the best approach, combined with, at the very least, wep encryption.
