You do not require a license.

You do not need to have the aerial removed by a professional nor anyone else.

As others have said owning a TV does not require having a license - only receiving or recording live television signals. However I would recommend packing away the sky box and disconnecting the aerial cable anyway - no point having something lying around gathering dust if you're not using it. You can detune the tv if that makes you sleep easier but it's not neccessary.
You can contact T licensing to tell them you no longer require a license and they may be kind enought to stop bugging you for 2 years with incessant, threatening letters about purchasing a license.

I heard a guy on the radio from the tv licence people and what he said was............

'If you own anything in the house that can receive a tv broadcasting signal you need a licence regardless of if it is plugged in or tunned in'
which means if you have a TV, Video, Sat Dish even a PC with an internet connection then you need a TV licence.

Rikki Friends of mine had a tv only wathced video's etc did not have an arieal they solderd the Socket at the back of the tv to recive the arial shut. They also sent a letter to the tv licensing company to inform them of this. They wrote back informing them that they would send a man in a van round to inspect them he turned up went through the house and was happy that they were not watching tv ie bbc/itv. They were also informed that they would probably have one or two people knocking at their door each year asking to see the license etc they had to prove that they were only watching dvd's.

If you only ever watch dvd's why not consider a projector that plugs into a lap top, much more expensive i know but cuts out the hassle ( total cost £800+)
    Money's too tight to mention!!!

And you believe that? These are the people who collect the money for the TV license. He's the equivalent of a debt collector who gets to keep all the money he collects. He's lying.

You don't need a license for a TV if you own a TV. Only if you use it to watch live TV signals. If you watch pre-recorded DVD's and tapes (bought licensed copies) you don't need one.

In fact from the answer to 'Do I need a license' on TV lIcensing's own website
If you use a TV or any other device to receive or record TV programmes (for example, a VCR, set-top box, DVD recorder or PC with a broadcast card) - you need a TV Licence. You are required by law to have one.

So no use relating to receiving or recording programmes - no license

I'm glad someone else pointed that out, as I had already provided that same info earlier in the thread with a link.

It does not say 'if you own a tv'.

'It's a waste of money really, for two channels'

Dont forget all the BBC Radio Stations, Internet and Freeview channels that are included in the price as well. Much better value for money when you look at it that way!

    Oh and Nicam! :j

This must be the biggest CON in the UK.

It does not say 'if you own a tv'. I'm not sure how you could prove that you were not using it to receive programmes. Maybe removing the aerial isn't enough, maybe having the tuner section disabled is. I dont know.

Sorry, my post is? I'm not sure the point you are trying to make. If you mean the licencing policy then I am not sure I follow you either. The number of people who own TVs but dont use them for watching TV must be relatively small.

For me (an ardent Radio4 and 6Music listener) the fee is worthwhile for the BBC radio stations alone.

The TV licence is nothing more than another Tax, The BBC earns more money from this mandatory tax than some countries.

The TV Licence authority are only as good as their data, it isn't a legal requirement to complete and fill in those forms that most electrical retail force in your face, and if they won't sell you the goods, make up the information.

The whole detector van issue is irrelevant if you don't have a CRT (cathode ray tube) TV they can't detect you watching the TV as in years gone bye the detector van would attempt to find an osculating spectrum.

If the TV Licence authority actually turn up on your door they have no right to enter your house make them get a warrant, they will never get one as the courts/ police see this a waste of their time.
Wales will be disregarded until given a place in "its a small world"
