Is there a leaflet that can be obtained to explain that certain CC holders will still have no chip on their card, or is this just a potential problem with cards that have a chip, but use a signature? I'm a little concerned that when I'm back in the U.K. next week that my US issued CC won't work! I know the chip and pin site says it's O.K. but it sounds as if there are still a few bugs in the system.

Hi Jennifer, you may encounter some silly shop assistants who haven't been briefed properly and do not realise that not all countries have chip and pin!! All retailers can and should accept Chip and Pin, Chip and Signature and Signature only cards. What retailers cannot accept is if somebody uses a chip and pin card and wants to sign then they have to turn them away. The reason being is that if a retailer allows a chip and pin customer to sign and the transaction is fraudulent, the retailer will have to pay for the fraud rather than the bank. If a customer uses a chip and Signature or a signature only card and the transaction is fraudulent, then the bank will pay for the fraud. If the retailer does not let you use your card then ask to see the manager. As posts have said before I can't believe that some stores have not trained their staff properly! They will lose a lot of business from people who live overseas and brits with chip and signature cards by this lack of training.
  • there is so much "hype" its annoying, a fair few of my customers have told me they have a chip and sig card, and they are worried I will turn them away, my till (like other retailers) will just pring the slip and ask for a sig, there isnt any rocket science there, so it is so annoying when other retialers make a fuss over situations over things like this...

    sorry for the rant!
