in Credit cards
Early Thursday afternoon - and I've had my credit card rejected at a store (after 2 attempts). No - I didn't forget my PIN and it worked fine yesterday and the day before.
Worried that I could no longer use my card (as advised by the shop assistant), I rang my card provider. _pale_
Don't know whether this is true or not, but I've been told the whole of the credit card system failed this afternoon. The paraphrased words were - there have been problems for everyone on the last 15 minutes. I've been told my card should be ok next time I use it.
This happened between 2 and 3 pm today (16th Feb).
Just thought I'd post, in case this happened to someone else. But I wonder if the doom and gloom people are corect and the system couldn't cope?

I used my visa card to pay for groceries today in Tesco and it was fine, but that was between noon and 1pm and also in Next too but that was even earlier, no problems either time though.“Ordinary riches can be stolen, real riches cannot. So glad to see your problem!!
I had a similar problem today around 2.30 trying to pay for petrol at tesco.
At first i used a pay at pump, inserted my LTSB credit card and it was rejected, then nationwide credit card rejected. So i filled up my car and paid at the kiosk - handed over my LTSB card first and it was rejected, then my nationwide and that was also rejected. As i had just paid in store with my LTSB debit card, i told her to try that and it worked no problem!
Sales assistant mentioned they had been having few problems, yet still reckoned it was my cards when i turned round and said must be their machines. However I think it can now be put down to a problem with the credit card system, especially as my debit cardw as accepted fine.
Woudl be interested in hearing of any other probs people have had

Mine was rejected today also at Tesco around 2pm. Got home and checked and all was ok. Put it down to Tesco glitch but what you say makes perfect sense. Peace of mind.:kisses3:.0

My local station couldn't accept cards this morning, said it was a software fault, I did wonder at the time whether it was chip 'n pin related0

My LTSB credit card was also rejected in my local branch machine at 2.30 today also. Reason given on machine was wrong PIN but I was entering it from the notice they had sent me..............0

Pre 15 February, using Chip and Signature Debit & Credit cards few problems, although the majority of retailers had no knowledge of them.
Treated like criminal.
(Guisborough Pub). The restaraunt staff had heard of Chip & Signature cards and perceived Chip and Signature cardhodlers to be for the sole use of the disabled. I'm not, therefore they questioned why I had Chip and Signature cards. Embarrassing for both parties, I paid by cash.
17 Feb Card Rejected/Accepted:
Used Chip & Sign credit card in the Canny Scots Shop (Gretna Green). Was initially told the cards were not accepted without a PIN. Urged staff to insert the card. Given transaction slip to sign, then the card was rejected. The queue was building, I asked the assistant to try again, this time the card was accepted. Astounded.
19 Feb.Tesco Confused Staff:
Used Chip and Signature debit card for purchases and cash back. Check-out operative had to call for assistance and advice before allowing me to sign the transaction slip.
I'ts no wonder that the NCC and other organisations are crying foul over the misinformation and lack of publicity surrounding Chip and Signature cards.0 -
Is there a leaflet that can be obtained to explain that certain CC holders will still have no chip on their card, or is this just a potential problem with cards that have a chip, but use a signature? I'm a little concerned that when I'm back in the U.K. next week that my US issued CC won't work! I know the chip and pin site says it's O.K. but it sounds as if there are still a few bugs in the system.

It's really astounding to note that so many retailers still haven't properly briefed their staff on the different types of cards out there - this has been known about for some time and it's hardly rocket science!
The Chip and Pin website has a number of downloadable guides, including this one designed for retailers which details the different routes they should take for chip and pin, chip and signature, no chip, etc. Basically, the shop assistant should just put the card in the reader and follow instructions - the technology can "tell" what type of card it is.
However, it seems even APACS are getting it wrong too, as the guide keeps referring to chip and signature cards as being exclusively for disabled customers - not so!
Cheers
