Tesco and a £5 Note

I thought after reading the last topic in here, Tesco deserved some praise.

I was in Islington Angel's Tesco a few years back and I was just buying lunch there and I opted to use the self-checkout machines. I fed the machine a tenner and got the change, well except for the £5 note that came a short while afterwards. Half-way back to college I realise that I'm missing that money so my friend suggests I go back and just hope it's still there as we had only expended 5 minutes.

So I went back and checked the machine but the fiver's missing. I asked the supervisor about my situation; might as well check as see what happened to that note. Before I arrived, there was a woman already at the machine I used so she asked her first if there was a fiver and she replied no. So she asks me to wait while she checks with security. I wasn't expecting the next bit.

She confirms that the woman did indeed take the £5 I left and was quite furious about her lying and told the security team to ban her from the store. I felt a little sorry for her as I know many people would've done the same and owning up to the fact that you took the money makes you feel embarrassed, I know I would. Anyway, the supervisor not only felt that was necessary but also gave me a £5 note! I did feel stupid afterwards but I was very pleased with the customer service I got there. :)

Anyone else ever left change at the self check-outs? I got used to waiting for the notes to come out but on odd occasions I still leave money behind (although I've never repeated what I did above). :|

The notes come out of a different "slot" to the coins.

Quite an easy error to make with these machines.

Does it not get sucked back into the machine if you don't take it. I have noticed there is a laser under there that obviously gets broken when you stick your hand it. Sometimes I have even heard it beep when I have taken the note. So I would have thought it would have the ability it take the note back if its not taken like cash machines do. Obviously this wouldn't stop someone after taking it if they were quick enough.

There is nowhere to suck it back to. The money drops onto a counter in a box (if that makes sense)
  • SA took my 5p off a litre voucher! I know this because they came over and handed me the receipt & said goodbye and stayed there. It was only when I got home I realised I'd specifically spent £50 and had no voucher!!!

I've only used this service twice and thankfully the last time my husband was with me. Started to get a bit flustered, had a line of people waiting behind me. Fed in a £10.00 note and collected the change but almost walked away without the £5.00 note but thankfully hubby had noticed my error and grabbed it quick. Have learnt my lesson and won't do that again.

Plus the notes come out at a slot in the vicinity of your knees - not exactly there in the face. It's not built to suck money back in.

However, in response to "has anybody else left money behind?"... I'm glad cash machines do suck it back in... I was getting some money ready to shop for a bridesmaid's dress, had the bride with me, was being taxi'd around by mother, running late, all very stressful.... a couple of hours later, went to look in purse.. no mioney
Checked every bag, every pocket, wondering where it had gone, slow realisation dawned that I Must have left it in the machine _pale_ Went back to the machine but of course it wasn't there!
I phoned the bank to see if there was anything I could do, they told me the machine would take it back in and my account would reflect whether any money had gone out the next day..... no money gone :T Soooo lucky that nobody else had come along just after me! I think it was something like £200 I had taken out!
    :)
