Maggots in my Asda-purchased cat food!Need advice on making a complaint please.

couldn't explain it all in the title, so please bear with me and read on...
popped along to my local asda this morning and bought three cellophane-wrapped boxes of 72-pouch Felix cat food (each big box consisted of six 12-pouch boxes) for £9 each (bargain!). got home to discover one of the small boxes was punctured. noticed it had a bit of a pong about it and so put it to one side while i put the others away. came back to it and opened it up to find a fly. "yuck, there's a fly", says me. "and maggots too", says the other half. ARGH! the box was loaded with maggots. it seems one of the pouches had burst or was punctured, giving the nasty things ample opportunity to breed and feast. after a bit of a panic attack (maggots are my 'thing', hate 'em), i rang my asda store and a woman took my details and told me to take the cardboard box back to the shop so they could process a claim to get their money back. after bleaching the kitchen, pulling out the other cat food boxes to check for more maggots, and a frenzied car clean (had put the boxes on the back seat, yuck), i went back to the store. customer services offered to swap the box. i asked if they would at least compensate me for the petrol i'd wasted and i was offered, after some pressing, a £5 gift card.
but... i've got home and feel a bit angry about it now. i've been shopping there for years and they offer me £5 to cover petrol after purchasing maggots from their store?!
is it me? i'm thinking about ringing their national customer servies number to complain tomorrow - but what do people think? am i going OTT?
ps also, if i do ring to complain further, should i tell them i'm a journalist (i am, really!) or would this just aggravate the matter? i've reported on several similar stories where the shoppers have received far better treatment than this.
help please!

I got one of their meals for two from the Chinese/Indian counter.
As I opened it the smell of rotton food hit me.
I returned it straight away, I had to buy something else for dinner (not from their), they gave me my bare refund, not a penny for petrol (16 miles round trip).0 -
How much compensation would be acceptable?
I'm sure they didn't knowingly sell you maggots. If the outer packaging had shown signs of being damaged and contaminated, it would have been removed from sale.
Things do occasionally get damaged in processing or transporting and due to the high volumes of product, they don't get spotted. I would just put it down to one of those things where nobody is at fault and move on.Here I go again on my own....0 -

I think they should compensate for the petrol involved & a gesture for the tine & trouble involved would be decent.
I got nothing for my petrol or time.0 -

OP, how much do you think would be reasonable? What amount of money would make you feel better about this situation? And most importantly, what sum of money would put you in the position that you would have been in had the cat food not contained maggots?0

Asda did there bit, they didn't have to give you a £5 voucher. They could of just replaced it.
wright to felix and they might give you vouchers or something.0 -
