OK Everyone, a complete success story here!!
I just called Virgin and they have reinstated the deal, refunded 2 late payment fees and refunded the interest charged. No questions asked. I didn't even have to get irrate.
As recommended I claimed the dd should have been set up and that I had been away, hence I had not read the statements. Basically do not play the honest guy card and do not admit any fault. Although this isn't really my style, honesty clearly does not always pay and to take on the big boys you've got to play them at their own game.
Only thing to watch out for I have to check my Experian account now and get any missed payment flags off there now Virgin/MBNA have accepted blame.
Thanks everyone for your time and advice.
